By Chip Chick

March 14th, 2005

Axion_lcd_tv_1I4U reports that Axion announced a new compact portable lcd tv. The styling is a bit retro and it’ll be priced at $139. Aside from being pretty small, the kicker is that the battery life is 405 hours! It also has AV input to connect to a DVD player. Not too shabby!

Free Fax to E-mail with Phone Number from K7.net

By Chip Chick

March 14th, 2005

LogoHere’s another great free service. K7.net gives you a 206 area code number
for you to use as a private fax line/number. Once someone sends a fax to your 206
number, the fax shortly arrives in your e-mail box as a TIFF attachment.
A
couple of years back there were several web sites that offered this service for
free but most went out of business or got bought out by Efax.com. I’ve been
using K7.net for a year and a half and they’ve been very reliable, especially considering it’s a free service! For $2 a
month you can get a personalized vanity number.

By Chip Chick

March 14th, 2005

Mail2web_logo_2Mail2Web.com has been around for a while
now but I don’t think many people know about it. Mail2web is a free service
which allows you to log into almost any kind of e-mail accounts. So if let’s say
you have 3 AOL e-mail accounts, a pop3 account, and a gmail account, you can go
to mail2web.com and access all of them. You can send, receive and even download
attachments via their website.  They even give you a free customized URL with a
list of all of your e-mail addresses for you to log into. Plus, they also offer
PDA and Wap Access. Their also secure and reliable, so don’t worry about entering your password on their site.

First Portable DVD Player with Wireless Headphone and TV Tuner

By Chip Chick

March 13th, 2005

10 First Portable DVD Player with Wireless Headphone and TV TunerThis new portable dvd player from Pixa Inc might look ordinary but its got a lot more under
the hood than other portable DVD players. At $299 it’s reasonably priced with
its 8.4 inch screen and a 16:9 aspect ratio. To add to the value it also
includes a pair of wireless headphones, a plug-in TV tuner, and a game console
or camcorder can be connected to it via its stereo AV input. Plus it comes with
a carrying case and ac adapter for international use. The battery life isn’t bad at about 3 hours and it supports both Pal and NTSC.
It’s about time
portable DVD players did more than just play DVDs. Since Portable Video Players
are becoming popular I suppose the Portable DVD player manufacturers are
starting to realize that they better innovate in order to survive. This awesome player is available for preorder and ships on the 25th.

CeBIT Samsung Photos with cool new phones

March 11th, 2005

Img00114MobileMania has tons of pictures from the Samsung area at Cebit. Lots of new and lovely cell phones are there. Plus there are pictures of the Samsung SGH-i750, which according to Engadget is a GSM version of the Samsung sgh-i730 which is a pocket pc phone with Wifi, bluetooth and 128mb ram. It’s not bad looking either. I also noticed a Windows Mobile Smartphone on page 6. Bring it on!

Nokia 6230i – New & Improved

By Chip Chick

March 11th, 2005

Nokia_6230i_01The Nokia 6230 is an excellent phone. I used it for about 10 months till I
replaced it with the Motorola
MPX220
. The Nokia 6230 series uses the Series 40 OS which probably is the
simplest and fastest OS on any cell phone. In my experience the Nokia 6230 was a
pleasure to operate. Last year when it was released it was ahead of it’s time
with features such as an Mp3 player plus memory card expansion, and a video
player. The 6230 was successful enough for Nokia to update it and create the
Nokia 6230i. According to the 6230i’s specs at Infosyncworld the new
6230i will have a better display, a better camera, and Edge. No dramatic changes
here, but improving the display is significant. If only they’d make the display
bigger I’d consider switching to the 6230i when it comes out. The Motorola
Mpx220 is definitely cool and very resourceful but sometimes I miss the
simplicity of the 6230i and it’s awesome speakerphone.

Siemens New Girly Phone – the CL75

By Chip Chick

March 9th, 2005

Siemens_cl75_3Today Siemens introduced a new flip phone geared towards the female audience.
The CL75 fashion phone is graced with a floral-motif and "soft contours." The
display has 262,000 vivid colors  that can be used as a pocket mirror. The
phone is also relatively light weight and small at 90
grams.
Surprisingly enough, Push To Talk is included and a decent 11mb
memory bank. When I first looked at the CL75 I assumed the phone would be
skimpy on features. I guess you can’t judge a phone by its looks.
So
this phone has brains and beauty.  But beauty is in the eye of the beholder,
as I would never be caught dead with this phone. A flower pattern on a cell
phone makes it seem like the phone is manufactured by Matel for little
girls playing Barbie. For more pictures of the CL75 check out SlashPhone

All Roads lead back to Ebay

By Chip Chick

March 9th, 2005

EbayroadsEbay has recently launched new classified ad websites, known as Kijiji in several cities worldwide. Ebay has also recently purchased some classified ad websites to use with Kijiji that were already popular in some countries. Back in August Ebay bought 25% of Craigslist, which is the U.S.’s biggest classified Ad site. Last month Ebay also bought Rent.com, an apartment and housing rental site for $415 million.
So far they are not planning on charging fees for posting ads, atleast for the near future. "We look at it as a long-term investment. We may decide to monetize
some aspects of it down the road, but now there are no plans," said
eBay spokesman Hani Durzy.

The Walk of Game

It’s really about time these pioneers of video games got some respect and honor and now they finally have… "the Walk of Game" is a new tribute to the pixelated icons of our youth.
Give us a few hundred years and Pac Man will be a religious movement.

Dell’s Lawsuit and why they Deserve it

By Chip Chick

March 8th, 2005
DellDell is currently being sued in California for
bait-and-switch practices. Plaintiffs are claiming that Dell has been engaging
in unsavory business practices such as advertising a low price and then billing
the customer a much higher price. Among the other complaints against Dell is
that they advertise low interest rates for their financing packages when there
are often actually hidden charges and higher interest rates involved. I’m a Dell
girl. It’s hard to say no to a company which generally makes good quality
products, especially when they often have great sales and coupon codes. Over the
past 2 years, without exaggerating, I’ve purchased over $30,000 worth of Dell
products – of course not just in personal purchases alone but from business
purchases as well.
A couple of months ago I decided to buy a laptop with them using their
"preferred" financing account. At the time they advertised 0% interest for 6
months so I figured it was worth it. I applied for the account and was accepted.
I was unpleasantly surprised a month later when my first bill came. An
outrageous 29% interest rate was applied to my bill. I thought this is probably
just a billing mistake so I called up to "correct it".

The Junxion Box – a Router like no other

By Chip Chick

March 6th, 2005

JunxionThis gnarly green box is not your average wireless router. Instead of being connected to your average highspeed dsl or cable connection, the Junxion Box above accepts a pc card cellular modem. What makes this green guy so special is that it allows other computers to share the pc card’s data connection via an ethernet chord or wifi like other standard routers. So if for example you are spending $80 a month on Verizon BroadbandAccess which is capable of 300kbps – 500kbs, than you could take the PC Card modem you use with it and place it into the Junxion box when you are at home. By doing that you can avoid spending $50 a month on highspeed internet in your home for your other computers. The Junxion box is compatible with Cingular, Sprint & Verizon wireless data services which all offer highspeed cellular data access. The Junxion box is pricey and not for everyone at $699, but it’s definately one of it’s kind and a very clever idea all together.

Enfora Wireless Portfolio for GSM/GPRS

By Chip Chick

March 5th, 2005

Mp950536_a_1Here’s another unique and mobile way to get online wirelessly. The Enfora Wireless Portfolio lets you connect your Windows Mobile or Palm Pda to a GPRS connection as long as it’s conected inside the portfolio. This is a great way to turn an ordinary PDA into a cellular phone and data device. So if you’re fond of your current pda but wish you could add GPRS to it then this is a great option. Yes, if you have a compactflash slot you could add GPRS via a GPRS compactflash card but not all PDAs have a compact flash slot – for example, the popular Ipaq 4155. The portfolio is also pretty small and it serves as a organizer that holds credit cards aside from carrying your PDA. This magical case retails for $229.95 without activation at Mobile Planet.

DataWind Pocket Surfer

By Chip Chick

March 5th, 2005

Pocketsurfer300_dpiThe DataWind PocketSurfer’s sole function is surfing the web on its pocketable VGA screen. The good part about this device is that web sites come up normally on it. Javascript works fine on this device and you can even experience popups like on a regular computer, plus it has a keyboard. It’s also relatively affordable at $199. However there are significant drawbacks to the Pocket Surfer – in order to surf the web with it you need a cellular phone with bluetooth and an unrestricted internet Data subcription from your cellular provider. Also, Datawind charges $10 a month to use the Pocket Surfer. Overall the Pocket Surfer is a unique device, but the fact that it doesn’t connect to the internet on its own probably explains why it hasn’t become very popular.

Making your Desktop Interesting with Konfabulator

By Chip Chick

March 5th, 2005

Konfibulator_4If you’re looking to spruce up your desktop with something other than an interesting background then Konfabulator is the way to go. Konfabulator is software that allows you to customize your desktop with working "widgets" such as an RSS reader, an Itunes Remote, today’s weather, and other adorable yet functional things that’ll clutter your dull desktop. And Konfabulator works for Windows & Mac OS. Konfabulator is very similar to DesktopX but Konfabulator seems to use alot less of your system resources.

New Apple PowerBook Laptops

By Chip Chick

March 4th, 2005

Indextop20050132It’s been almost 2 years since Apple updated their Powerbook line of laptops. Today they finally relased new PowerBook models.
Among the new features inside these models is a Sudden Motion Sensor that helps protect your hard drive in case of a fall. The Powerbook also has a new trackpad with a special scrolling capability that allows you to drag two fingers over the
trackpad in order to scroll vertically and horizontally or pan around an active
window.
From now on the Powerbook line will come with a minimum of 512mb ram in each notebook, that’s a smart move being that the latest Mac OS can be very memory taxing.  Built-in Bluetooth and 802.11g is included in all the new models as well. And the Processor inside is still a G4.
Prices start at $1,499 for a model with a 12-inch screen. For more check out Yahoo! News  and Apple.

Hacker Hacks Admissions Website for Harvard Business School

By Chip Chick

March 3rd, 2005

HarvardHackers seem to be everywhere lately – for example Paris Hilton’s recent Sidekick II getting hacked. Another Hacker was successful this week, an anonymous hacker known as “brookbond,” was able to figure out a way for students applying to business schools – including Harvard’s Business school to access their admissions decisions letters. He posted the directions for how to do this on Business Week’s Online forum and as a result many students followed these directons and were able to access their letters a month earlier.

Microsoft wants our Teddy Bears

By Chip Chick

March 3rd, 2005

MicroteddyFor most of us our best friend as a child was our
cuddly teddy bear. Not content with controlling 99% of our everyday lives, it seems
that even our teddy bears will one day be under “Big Brothers” influence as
well.
Microsoft has developed a teddy bear which can monitor your child 24/7, even
after you shut down for the night. I love stuffed animals, most girls do, but the day I have to
go through an activation system in order to get a hug from my bear is the day I
really lose it.  For more on Robo-bear, check out Yahoo News.
