This gnarly green box is not your average wireless router. Instead of being connected to your average highspeed dsl or cable connection, the Junxion Box above accepts a pc card cellular modem. What makes this green guy so special is that it allows other computers to share the pc card’s data connection via an ethernet chord or wifi like other standard routers. So if for example you are spending $80 a month on Verizon BroadbandAccess which is capable of 300kbps – 500kbs, than you could take the PC Card modem you use with it and place it into the Junxion box when you are at home. By doing that you can avoid spending $50 a month on highspeed internet in your home for your other computers. The Junxion box is compatible with Cingular, Sprint & Verizon wireless data services which all offer highspeed cellular data access. The Junxion box is pricey and not for everyone at $699, but it’s definately one of it’s kind and a very clever idea all together.

You can easily build your own Junxion with $179 Soekris net4521 http://www.soekris.com/net4521.htm and your favorite linux router. Soekris even sells a nice metal box for their board for additional $30. I know a number of guys who have already built their own custom Junxion boxes. Another option is to wait for Kyocera’s KR1 EV-DO celluar router which will be on the market soon for $190. It uses a PC card radio like Junxion and has WiFi, but it also 4 ethernet ports and USB. This is a really slick cellular router PC Magazine wrote a really nice review on the Kyocera KR1 – see http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,175

Doesn’t This Violate Your Cell Contract?
FYI: I paid a visit to the Cingular store and picked up the latest data service contract. It appears that the contracts are getting more restrictive as time passes. Here is what the current contract says:
“Data Service sessions may only be conducted for the following purposes: (i) Internet browsing; (ii) e-mail; and (iii) corporate intranet access (including access to corporate e-mail, customer relationship management, sales force automation, and field service automation applications). Prohibited uses include, but are not limited to, using services: (i) with server devices or host computer applications, including, without limitation, Web camera posts or broadcasts, continuous jpeg file transfers, automatic data feeds, telemetry applications, automated functions, or any other machine-to-machine applications, (ii) as substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections or (iii) for Voice over IP. Furthermore unlimited plans cannot be use for (i) uploading, downloading or streaming movies, music or games or (ii) in conjunction with WWAN or other applications or devices which aggregate usage from multiple sources prior to transmission.”
It would appear that the last part is clearly referring to cell routers like the Junxion Box or Kyocera KR1, and quite possibly even Windows built-in Internet sharing service.
I do not have the latest Verizon contract yet, but the older contracts seem very similar.
