HP Ipaq 6515 Review

Hp_ipaq_hw6515_i00Infosyncworld.com has a hands-on review of the highly anticipated upcoming Ipaq
6515. The verdict so far is that the 6515 is a disappointment because of its
not so great battery life, keyboard, and slow processor. This is really
disappointing to hear, it really seemed that HP was going to come out with an
awesome device with the 6515. I don’t know what’s up with HP lately. It doesn’t
seem like they’ve came out with a quality PDA since the Ipaq 4155, and
their previous smartphone attempt- the 6315, was overwhelmed with problems.
Better start shaping up HP! Especially with Samsung beginning to throw some
spectacular devices at us.

thats really too bad. I had intended to try this one, since my previous, a 6315, didn’t survive my limited temper…guess I’ll keep looking.:(

    Angry at HP

My joystick fell off two weeks ago, sent the unit to HP telling them in advance the problem on my 6515 phone, clerk said to send it in on warranty. Got phoned back by HP, they told me they cannot repair the unit they offered a swap and wanted to charge me 303$ (excessive). I paid the unit 400$ on ebay, I tried to discuss the issue with a corporate office sales relation person in Canada and they say I had misused it. I have had 3 ipaqs in the last 8 years a 3660, a 3955 wich I still own, I know how much pressure to apply to an Ipaq button… had a problem once with the stylus button on my 3660, Compaq had at that time happily repaired it at no charge, things have changeg since HP took their business. I discussed this with the corporate office telling them this issue is frequently related on the internet. On one site a guy had a 6515 with cingular, he had had four replacements because of the same problem. Even in their own forum site this problem is refered to. An ebay seller is offerring a replacement button fo 24$, HP told me to buy it from them, can you believe that? On top of all that they said to me I had to pay an evaluation fee of 67$, told thew I did not want to pay… They replied they would send this to a collection agency if I did not pay within 90 days. My guess is this issue would cost too much to HP to recall deffective units so they prefer to abuse their custemors by telling them it’s misuse… I plan to take them to small claims court and post this comment on as many sites as possible starting here. Good luck!

My 6515 only had a problem with unexpected shutdowns. They replaced it. It is very slow on the internet and many sites will not play video or show certain material.

I had the same problem too, after acquiring it 2nd handedly. My stuff’s problems seems to originated from a faulty battery cover, where a tiny part of it is supposed to function as both a lock and push a microswitch in the ipaq’s body (which enables the power on switch). Having sent the 6515 to the HP service center, then I found this following from other site :

I realised that the device would not start if the plastic back cover was removed however there is no metal on the cover so it cannot be used as a switch mechanism of any sort. I then looked for any possible switches around the holes where the cover makes contact with the PDA and found a small microswitch on the top right hand side where the cover locks the PDA. I have simply put a small piece of tissue paper in the hole to push the switch in further, placed the cover back on and since then it has been perfect. Well I fixed it around six hours ago which for me is a miracle as it has been on six hours without resetting. I would say that it is a design problem as the back plate is very cheaply finished.”

    Hope this might help.

    @ Tom Aiellos
If I get your point correctly, the 6515 can not show certain pictures or files. I had same problem also when trying to use the preinstalled picture viewer (I forgot what the name was.., HP PIcture Viewer?).. It can’t open any picture file with size more than 100KB, sometimes can’t open a picture at all. But then I installed a third party software like “Resco Picture Viewer” and it worked all fine. Maybe you could try it also.

    Hope this might help.

True is that the little round area - if you lay the PDA down with the button face doen, it would be on the back right where the hooks for the cover go in?

I have been having the same problem suddenly. I have a 3 yr warranty but hate to be without my PDA.

    @ beth:
If I get you right, yes it’s the one that enters into the groove on the back, rightside, the upper one.

Nevertheless, I have corrected the problem by: just bring it to HP Service Center in my country! They didn’t tell me what they did to it, but the sudden shutdown never happen again. My guess is, they just disable the microswitch in the battery cover’s groove so that it will never turn off by itself when it shakes, knocked, (even fell on the floor) or things like that.

Now I can use it everyday and treat it just like my other ordinary mobile phone :) Thanks HP !

Thanks. I am going to call HP tomorrow and see what they can do to fix it since it is under warranty.

Well, I just got my Ipaq 6515 yesterday, and i’m having troubles getting service, and it randomly looses service. Anyone know what I can do to fix this?

  13. Ed on February 5th, 2008 5:36 pm

I just got a refurbished 6515. It will not charge the new battery that came with the unit. When I place the charger in, the red light just does a rapid flash. I own a 5510 so I know this is wrong. Just wanted to replace my 5510 and cell phone into 1 unit….Any ideas to get it to take a charge?? ( I did a soft AND hard reset too!)

There’s a fix for the common problems such as red light of death and the random shutdown on Ipaq 6515 here :

Hope this is of some use to you guys!
