That means you don't actually have to have a gmail account - you just have to have access to a jabber server. You don't even have to use their client. What Google did is in no way new or inventive. The hope is that they will improve upon a solid IM protocol and add features without making it horrid like AIM. And while colors are nice, if another person that is *obviously* color blind messages me with their custom colors, I'm switching back to a monochrome CRT. It’s just jabber.
