Novatel USB 870 EVDO Modem on its Way

One of the big news stories at CTIA this past week was that Novatel will becoming out with a EVDO Express card this May. This is exciting news for MacBook Pro owners who want to take advantage of EVDO. Unfortunately, the news doesn’t cheer up Powerbook or iBook owners who are also very limited when it comes to high-speed cellular options. According to EVDOinfo, Novatel is working with Sprint on a USB EVDO Modem that will be Windows and Mac OS X compatible. The modem will be directly attachable via its USB connector or via a USB cable. According to EVDO info, a USB modem connected to a USB cable which is placed about 12 inches away from your computer, will pump out better performance then a PCMCIA, ExpressCard or embedded EVDO device. Overall, the idea of a USB modem is really appealing, even if you’re not a laptop owner. Unlike a PC card, you can theoretically swap your USB modem from computer to computer without much hassle. We’re sold.
