Webaroo is a new service that lets you surf the web even if you are off line. All you have to do is download their free software and you’ll then be able to download large portions of the internet on to your laptop or PDA. They even have "web packs" which allow you to choose a specific subject category for web sites that you would like to have on your hard drive, because it would of course be near impossible to download every page for every subject there is on the web.
Since most people generally have easy access to the internet, we think
that this service won’t become too popular and that it will only
fulfill the needs of certain niche situations (such as being stuck in
Antartica without a internet connection). On the flip side, this
service could become popular anyway because it allows the average user
to save libraries of information on to their personal hard drives. I
wonder how Encarta would feel knowing that someone just downloaded
their whole encyclopedia to their computer? Most web sites make money
from advertisements and page impressions, which is why they don’t
charge for the content on their site. But if people can download the
whole Dictionary.com, or Encarta.com to their hard drive, they wont
need to bother going on-line to these sites anymore, and the sites
would lose some revenue. Anyway, it was just a thought…(Source: T3)
