If you’re looking for a convenient and an easy way to catalog and share your book collection, then LibraryThing Beta is for you. This handy on-line tool enables one to list up to 200 of their favorite books for Free; for over 200 books it costs $10 for a yearly membership and $25 for a lifetime membership. You can also browse other people’s catalogs, connect with other book lovers and get recommendations. One sore spot that some may find in using this service is that you can’t expose your online book categories solely to specific friends and family–it’s either completely private or completely public. Lastly, I managed to input 10 books in less than 7 minutes (typing in the name of your book or the author fills in almost all in the necessary information). All in all, Librarything rocks and I highly recommend it. – Kevin Geter

I also highly recommend Readerware (www.readerware.com), which I notice has a newer version than I have. It can use one of those Cybercat barcode scanners, or you can manually input the ISBN, and it will get the info from Library of Congress or other sources.
I notice their website also has links to free barcode scanners. I’ve used it to catalog the thousands of paperbacks my husband and I ended up with when we got together and consolidated (extensive) book collections.

Oops, that was a CueCat barcode scanner. They were all over the place as freebies a few years ago. Being able to use it with Readerware (see other comment) made entry MUCH easier.

Library Thing is great…I have it set up on my website if you want to see how it looks.
