Crumpler Photo Bags Review

By Leah Cheng

September 19th, 2006

Crump2Many digital and non-digital
cameras come with a camera bag, which tend to be like a thin leather Sheath. These cases, prevent dust from getting on the lens, but they otherwise don’t do much to protect the camera. Crumpler, an
Australian bag manufacturer, has a line of camera bags designed not
only to look good, but to keep your expensive camera and its
accessories from getting damaged.

Crumpler’s Photo bags look like miniature versions of their messenger bags, so you don’t have to worry about advertising that you are carrying around expensive electronics. What I love the most is how well made and durable the bags are. These bags are  made to be tough. They all feature a water resistant nylon shell with rip-stop nylon lining and industrial webbing. The velcro flap is so strong that you have to actually give it a yank. In addition, they also have a clip/buckle release over the velcro to keep the bag super safe. The interior is also very well padded. I was surprised at how soft and thick it was. There are also lots of pockets for extra batteries and memory cards. They thought of every minute detail, down to the size 10 zippers, which are big and unbreakable.

Pimp your Car’s Dashboard with JVC’s KD-AVX2

We don’t often bother with gadgets that pimp out your car, but JVC’s KD-AVX2 is what we would want in our automobile – if we had one, and didn’t take
taxis and the subway most of the time. The KD-AVX2 is a DVD and CD player with a
3.5" inch wide screen monitor, it also has an AM/FM tuner, it plays WMA &
MP3 files off of DVDs and CDs, it comes Satellite radio ready and it has
on-board 5.1 surround-sound. It also has the ability to control your ipod using
the KS-PD100 Ipod Adaptor, and it has another neat little feature that
allows you to load custom images on to the display. But most of all, we think
that its design is pretty slick. JVC’s KD-AVX2 in-dash DVD player retails for $549 at Crutchfield.

Magazine Ads that Need an Extreme Makeover

By Chip Chick

September 19th, 2006
Pcmagad1_1
While reading through September 19th’s issue of PC Magazine, I began to notice how awful some of the ads inside of it were. Chip Chick may not
be a graphics design oriented blog, but I can’t help but share these atrocities.
It pains me to think that these advertisers spent thousands of dollars on ugly full page ads. Would anyone be interested in what their advertising? Personally, when I see a poorly designed advertisement, I mentally write the company off as shoddy.

Perhaps these companies were skimpy when it came to
paying a print design company to create their ad? Maybe they had their intern do the ad? Either way, these two ads are in need of an extreme makeover. And while we’re on the subject, has anyone else seen any bad ads lately?Pcmagad2

5 in 1 USB Pen

By Chip Chick

September 17th, 2006
5in1 5 in 1 USB Pen
This 5 in 1 USB pen does so many things, you’d expect to find it hiding in James
Bond’s pocket protector. The pen functions as a USB flash storage device, it can play
MP3, WMA, and WAV files, and it can record and play back recordings. The battery life
for playing music is pretty pathetic at 5 hours, so its selling point is that it really does look like an ordinary pen. The 5 in 1 USB pen is available in capacities of 128MB to 1GB in the colors
black or silver.

Pure Digital’s ONE Hot Pink DAB Radio

By Chip Chick

September 15th, 2006

Pureone
If there is one thing we appreciate more than a pink DAB radio, it would be a hot pink DAB radio. Pure Digital’s ONE DAB Radio with FM is available in black, white and of course – hot pink! It also has a great battery life of up to 35 hours and it sports neat scrolling text on its backlit display. It retails for £49.99 in the U.K., we’re those lucky Brits can take advantage of all that DAB has to offer. And really, why does Britain get free digital radio with tons of funky radio systems to choose from. Meanwhile in the old U.S. of A we have Sirius and XM which both charge a monthly fee – and they don’t come in nearly as many delicious flavors. It just doesn’t seem fair…

Sony’s KDL-46XBR2 LCD Flat Panel with Custom Color Bevels

By Chip Chick

September 14th, 2006

Brvia
Sony’s new Bravia LCD Flat Planels are truly a work of art. Perhaps that is why sony decided to give us the option of framing them. Sony is offering custom bezels for the KDL-46XBR2 and KDL-40XBR2 in the colors arctic white, pacific blue, velvet black, scarlet red and sienna brown for $299. This is the first time we’ve seen face plates for a large flat panel display. Did we say face plates? We meant to say custom bezels. The 46" KDL-46XBR2 itself retails for $4,299, and the 40" KDL-40XBR2 retails for $3,499.  And they both sport some cool features like 1080p and a PC input so that you can use these as a computer monitor as well.

Celery Fax Machine Sends & Receives E-mail without a PC

By Chip Chick

September 13th, 2006

MimicropCelery certainly looks like ordinary fax machine, but it does something that most fax machines don’t – it sends and receives email. To send an email, you handwrite a note and feed it into the fax machine. The recipient then receives your note as an attachment. As for incoming emails, they come through like ordinary faxes.
One year of Celery’s black & white service retails for $219 with the device, or $259 for the device and one year of color service. That isn’t too expensive at all, and this will probably do really well amongst those who have a hard time understanding how to use email. Then again even my five year old niece can send and receive email, and so can plenty of elderly people. ( Source: MacAddict Magazine, October 2006)

Case Logic’s NBP3 Sporty Laptop Backpack with Line-out

By Chip Chick

September 12th, 2006
Caselogic_1
Case Logic’s NBP3 backpack isn’t very stylish with its unspectacular black
and gray design. But despite its drab looks, it’s worth taking into
consideration because of its many functional aspects. First off, the backpack
has ergonomically padded shoulder straps which you’ll especially
appreciate while you’re carrying a 15.4 inch laptop inside of its protective
computer compartment. The NBP3 also has lots of pockets to keep your stuff
organized and it comes with a CD folio. But best of all is its built-in
external headphone jack for easy listening to the portable music player of your
choice. Case Logic’s NBP3 retails for $38 at Wal Mart.

Review of Codex’s Slim-profile Protective Case for Macbook & Macbook Pro

By Chip Chick

September 12th, 2006
Codex
You might say that I’ve been around the block when it comes to laptop
sleeves and cases, I currently own 3 neoprene sleeves and 2 laptop cases – in
other words I have an obsession with keeping my gadgets clean. Every time I see
someone’s laptop sitting around naked and vulnerable, I can’t help but think
that it’s a disaster waiting to happen. If you have a laptop, a case or sleeve
is absolutely necessary if you want to keep your laptop in good shape.

Codex’s slim-profile protective case for the Macbook and Macbook Pro is
somewhere in between a sleeve and a case because it has the protective chops of
a case, but it’s thin enough to slip into a bag like a sleeve. The Codex is a
little bit thicker and heavier than your standard neoprene laptop sleeve, but
it’s a trade-off since you are getting more protection in return. Unlike most
neoprene cases, both the front and back side of the Codex is very rigid and
sturdy, so you would be hard-pressed to bend it. The case’s outer material is
made of a tough Viscotex material. The inside of the Codex is made up
of Terahedron microfiber, a soft material that makes for great cushioning for keeping your Macbook safe from bumps and scratches.

Audiovox’s Versatile DVD Shuttle System

By Chip Chick

September 11th, 2006

Shuttle_circles_1
Audiovox’s DVD Shuttle System does the usual portable DVD player stuff that it takes to make a great traveling companion – it plays DVDs, CDs and Mp3s on its LCD screen. Ok, well that alone is probably enough to make you yawn, but don’t fall asleep just yet. The DVD Shuttle System can also fit in several docking systems, including in-vehicle, under-cabinet or a tabletop docking stations with built-in TV tuners. With all that added versatility, this portable DVD player might make you turn your eyes away from Sony or one of the other big players.
A slimline remote is also included with the system, and there are optional accessories that you can purchase for it, including a game controller. Audiovox’s DVD Shuttle Players are available with 7", 8.5" and 10.2" inch displays.

Gateway’s Answer to the iMac, the Profile 6 SB

By Chip Chick

September 11th, 2006

6sb Gateways Answer to the iMac, the Profile 6 SB
It’s no iMac in beauty, but the Gateway Profile 6 SB has garnered some very good reviews from PC Magazine. The 6 SB (not the most cleverest of names) is an all in one PC with a space saving design. For $1,519 you get a 19 inch monitor, 1GB of ram, an Intel Dual Core processor, a 160GB hard drive, a dual layer DVD+/- optical drive, a 9-in-1 digital media card reader and an nVidia GeForce 7300LE video card. The only thing that the 6 SB has going for it that makes it truly stand out, is that its made up of upgradeable desktop components. This is as oppose to most similar all-in-one space saving PCs that are usually made out of laptop components that aren’t very upgradeable. But unless that upgradeable factor is really important to you, stick with an iMac.

Will scientific wonders ever cease? The FDA has approved the sale of the SmartPill pH.p Capsule. It’s a small blue electronic device shaped like a pill that is meant to be swallowed. Because of it’s wireless capablilites it can transmit data [via a reciever worn by the patient] as it is passing through the gastrointestinal tract. The receiver is then returned to the doctor while the pill can be disposed. This provides medicial professionals an alternative to treating Gastroparesis. (Source: Technology Review) –Leah Cheng

NetZero Offers Free Private Phone Number with Voicemail

By Chip Chick

20051005 NetZero Offers Free Private Phone Number with Voicemail
We’re not sure how long this has been around… or whether or not there is a catch. But NetZero is offerring a free private phone number with voice mail. For us New Yorkers, they have a selection of 718, 646 and 347 area codes. And they even give you the option of being notified of a new voicemail via text message or email alert. We love freebies, but we’re a bit nervous… after all, didn’t NetZero start out as a free service which went on to buying out most of the other free dial up providers… and then went on to charging for its services?

Electro-Animated Movie Poster

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Measuring, just 1/8th of an inch thin, Bass Industries has developed flexible
lightweight posters that actively illuminate. The poster requires no light box or rear illumination, but just a power outlet to plug the in to. But as much as this is pretty cool, if we see an animated Paris Hilton poster hanging
somewhere….
These Electro-Animated Movie Posters retail for $1,575, and Bass Industries will create custom posters of whatever images you provide them with. (Source: Electronic House Magazine, September 2006)
