Most
iPod Speaker systems tend to be either powerful but not portable, or portable
but not powerful. The iThunder is powerful enough to reach high volumes, yet
its boom box design makes it portable too. When the handle is down, the
iThunder looks like a smaller sized stereo system with a lovely metal decor.
Push the metal handle and the handle snaps up so that you can grab the iThunder
and go. We haven’t seen such a clever handle like this one on any other system.
Weighing just 5.5lbs, we think that the iThunder would be great to bring with
you to the beach and to other outdoor activities, or perhaps you could have it
tag along to your friend’s house when you want to share your tunes.

MX
Audio’s iThunder Portable Boom Box
also functions as a charging dock for your
ipod. And it can run off of 8C
batteries, or you can plug the iThunder in to a power jack with the included AC
adapter. Unlike most other iPod boomboxes, the iThunder is compatible with
every generation ipod, excluding the Shuffle. Adapters for the different
generation ipods are included in the box and are very easy to snap on.

The
iThunder also comes with a matching remote that is very small and light, yet
very responsive and easy to use. Buttons on the remote include mute, back
light, fast previous track, pause/play, next track, and shuffle. We could
control the iThunder from up to several feet away as long as had a line of
sight with the infrared receiver on the front of the iThunder. On the iThunder itself,
there are up and down volume buttons, as well as an on and off switch.

The
iThunder produces very good sound, with a respectable amount of bass. However,
high maintenance audiophiles should keep in mind that this is a boom box and
not a replacement for a full blown audio system. We did notice that tracks with
higher bit rates sounded better than tracks created with lower bit rates, but that can be expected with any device.

The
iThunder is available in black and white, as well as pink, and it retails for
$179.95
– which is a really good price that undercuts most other similar boom
boxes. Overall, we think that anyone who buys the the iThunder will be very
happy with it, and our guess is that it would be especially valued by
co-eds living in a dorm room situation, teens, and anyone who values a great
form combined with great function. But most of all, pink lovers will fall head
over heals for the pink version of the iThunder. - Ali Heriyanto
