Memorex’s 4 Gig MMP8640 Digital Media Player

mmp8640 main Memorexs 4 Gig MMP8640 Digital Media PlayerWe can’t blame Memorex for trying, but the digital audio player market is a hard place to make it in nowadays. Their latest contender is the MMP8640, a somewhat decent looking device that supports MP3, WMA-DRM protected files and MPEG-4 video files on its 1.8 inch color screen. It’s also got 4GB of memory which can be expanded via a mini SD slot, an FM radio, it comes preloaded with 100 sounds, has a battery life of up to 20 hours, and it even comes with a protective sleeve. Overall nothing, we haven’t seen before but the fact that it comes with a choice of blue, cyan, yellow, green, or red accents is kind of cool, we guess.

I bought the 4G Memorex MMP8640. At first i was excited because of the 4gigs of space, its size and the price. But it soon went all downhill.

    1) When i would download either a video or record my voice, a funky error would come up in the playlist and if you accidentally selected it to play, the player would freeze up. I couldnt delete the error to save my life. The programming wouldnt allow it to be deleted. I had to do an entire system wipe which erased ALL OF MY MUSIC. I did that 3 times.
    2) If you breathed on this player wrong it would freeze up. In all seriousness i had to press and hold the reset button on this player at least 8 times in the 2 weeks that i owned it.
    3) The buttons feel really loose and I didnt like how the control pad looked crooked. It looked crooked because the factory design on the control pad was painted on crooked. Very tacky!
    4) The kicker!! At exactly 2 weeks the HOLD button on top of the player got stuck in the hold position. The plastic external switch came loose from the internal switch and i was no longer able to power the player on. Now i know someone would ask me how rough i am with electronic products but trust me, in the 2 weeks that i had this player, I didnt put a scratch on it. It lived better than me. Thank goodness for purchase returns.

This player has a couple of good features. I like being able to change the color, change the panorama, and its f/w functionality, and the price. This Mp3 player will sell fast because of the price. In fact i have seen it stocked on Targets shelves for about 2 months. So kudos to Memorex. I have to say though, unless i bought the one MP3 player that fell into the .001% product failure bracket, you should invest in another player. I know this was long but whatever.

    Peace

I would NOT recommend this player. It worked at first, for a few days, but now will not even turn on. I tried EVERYTHING to bring it back to life. I stumbled across several blogs about it and apparently this little gadget has a bad reputation for crashing for no apparent reason. Don’t buy it, it’s a piece of crap.
