Sure, they are throwing cameras in to everything nowadays, whether it be inanything from a cell phone to MP3 players. Still we didn’t expect to discover a camera in a device whose main gig is working as a voice recorder. RCA’s TM416 digital voice recorder features a 1.5 inch color LCD screen, 128MB of flash memory and a 0.3MP camera. Yeh, 0.3MP isn’t even half decent, but what were ou expecting in a digital voice recorder anyway. It also comes with a clip-on microphone and carrying case. RCA’s TM416 Digital Voice Recorder retails for $129.99.

I purchased this unit and anticipated its arrival with the excitement of a 12 year old girl getting a new outfit for school.
The unit came, I followed instructions by charging the rechargeable batteries on the charger with the USB to computer for 6 hours. Well actually it was more like 8 hours. I then attempted to use the unit which continually decided to turn itself off repeatedly before I could even get to the first menu. It said the battery was low. OK so I decided to put it back on the charger and actually left the unit charging for 2 days. If that didn’t work well I’d have to think of another way. So here again I turned the unit on and voila the battery showed as full and I began going through the menu. However, that would be short lived. If I paused for 2 seconds or so to look at the instructions the unit decided once again that the battery was low and immediately turned itself off.
Well – at that point I was about ready to *&@%**!! I pulled out a barnd new pair of AAA batteries and replaced them in the unit. And off again I went through the menu and once again I paused for a second or so and low and behold the “battery low” indicator came on again – and the unit turned off.
OK – I give up!!!! It is as we speak on the way back to the vendor.
So here I am once again “shopping” for a similar unit with the same attributes of this unit. I really don’t think that I want to try another one of these RCA units. I say that only because I have searched the web and have not been able to locate any positive postings on this unit. But I must be fair and say that I also have not heard anything negative about this unit either. I guess time will tell. I did see however that this unit is not listed on the RCA website as one of their products any longer – maybe that in and of itself is statement enough.

Not sure if you wanted the camera or the recorder function of the RCA, but for a great recorder at $199, check out the Zoom H2.
