Throwing a tour guide application in to a digital camera isn’t so ridiculous as it sounds, and is certainly no more ridiculous then putting a video game in a digital camera – which is a trend that some manufacturers are starting to pick up. Samsung’s L74 comes complete with a World Tour Guide that highlights tourist attractions in popular cities. Considering that we travel with our digicam, this isn’t a half bad idea. Unfortunately, the software is so poorly executed that it reads like a joke instead of being something practical. For instance, here is their description of Beacon Hill in Boston, “Beacon Hill is like a maze; pathways decorated with red bricks and gravels and classical houses in 18 to 19″ style show off its beautifulness.” Perhaps Samsung should concentrate its efforts on making the actual camera better, instead of spending time and money on throwing in half-baked extras. Overall, this is really a shame because Samsung excels at most of its products, except digicams. Now if we haven’t scared you off yet and you still want the L74 with it’s 3″ Touch Screen LCD and 7 megapixel CCD, it retails for $299. (Source: Laptop Magazine, August ’07)
