If you’ve ever worked with any software like 3d Studio Max, AutoCAD, or Maya, then you know that often a mouse just doesn’t cut it for working efficiently in the world of X, Y and Z. 3DConnexion’s SpacePilot was designed to help give you more control by being able to pan, rotate, position and zoom in a single fluid motion while still being able to use the mouse in your other hand to edit the model or select menu items. The SpacePilot has a built-in optical sensor as well as a LCD display and programmable speed keys. A configuration wizard is also included to get you started with tutorials and settings to make the SpacePilot work for you. The SpacePilot is compatible with a large amount of applications, including Photoshop, most 3d software and a few Mac OS applications as well. Unfortunately, the SpacePilot is pricey at $399, which means that it will keep it out of most student’s hands, who are some of the people who could use it most.
