Nintendo Wii Becomes a Rehabilitation Tool in Hospitals

wiiphys Nintendo Wii Becomes a Rehabilitation Tool in HospitalsThe Nintendo Wii was created for entertainment purposes but it’s evolved in to an internet device, as well as even a dedicated exercising tool with the upcoming Wii Fit game. But aside from its traditional uses, some Physical Therapists at Ohio State University Medical Center’s Dodd Hall Rehabilitation Hospital in Columbus have transformed it in to a therapeutic tool as well. One patient named Franklin Perry has been using the Wii to rebuild the muscles in his immobilized right side that resulted from a stroke. This all started when Robbie Winget, an occupational therapist at Dodd Hall heard that a rehab hospital in Alberta, Canada was using the video game system as a rehab tool. After trying the Wii out for himself he realized that the could help patients build balance, coordination, endurance and upper and lower body strength. Since then the hospital has been using the Wii for the past few months to help people recovering from strokes and spinal cord or traumatic brain injuries. Patients have also been using it’s News and Weather channels to keep up to date and improve their brian function. On average, the patients at Dodd Hall undergo a total of three hours of daily therapy and work with the Wii for about 30 minutes per day two to three times per week. (Source: Yahoo News)

Well I bought a Nintendo Wii after I suffered a severe head injury in a vehicle rollover after falling asleep after a 12hr shift on the drilling rigs and hitting an approach and flipping and rolling my diesel pickup truck causing me severe brain injuries which led to me going into a wheelchair. But I can stil walk but not on my own yet, I say yet because after STARS air ambulance rescued me and I stayed in a coma for a month after my crash the doctors pretty much figured I was just gonna die. But since I’ve come around and tried the Wii I couldn’t believe just how simple the games were to play, compared to the Ps2 I had this Wii for a person with a head injury is the BOMB, I just love it I’d recomend it to anybody with brain injuries or any injuries because the games aren’t violent based like other systems but mind stimulating and get a person pumped to do their best and for having a brain injury I can’t see anything wrong with that now can you?. I haven’t heard absoletly nothing bad about the rehabilitation that the Wii has to offer yet only the pluses. And I have a brain injury that makes my left arm not work but thank goodness I’m right handed and the Wii is the Cats @ss as far as I’m concerned
