Earlier this year at CES we had reported on the Audiovox homebase Message Center and Digital Frame. At the time we where told it would be released in time for Mother’s Day and alas it was. So would this be a new spin on the average Joe digital frame? I guess we shall see.
Design:
Before you add a gadget to your kitchen area it is very important to many that it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb and that it should be aesthetically pleasing. The homebase blends in by having an all white design except for the control keys to the left of the unit which are green. The front is made of a high gloss acrylic that allows for the unit to easily be cleaned that surrounds a 7 inch LCD color display. To the left of the unit is also the power switch, USB port, SD/MMC/MS/xD, and CF slots for pulling off media. The unit comes with 512MB of built-in memory but for some that may not be enough. So the ability to expand the memory is excellent. On the right hand side of the unit is slots for a marker and post-it pads. Overall the homebase Message Center has a neutral color tone and not an ambitious design that would fit into any type of designer or non-designer kitchen quite nicely.

It looks like a Rubik Cube, it kind of works like a Rubik Cube, but it’s actually a clock. The 80’s Cube Clock is an adorable take on an iconic toy. Hopefully we’ll be able to figure out how to set the time on this more easily than actually solving a rubik cube puzzle. The clock also works as a calendar, an alarm clock and it also shows the current temperature. The 80’s Cube clock retails for $19.99.

When we think about it, putting a pocket on a pillow designed to hold a remote does make sense, so why hasn’t anyone thought of it until now? Available in black or natural cotton, the Organic Cotton remote pocket pillow has a special pocket with an illustration of a remote control on it. So the next time you can’t find the remote? Check the pillows – the $116 pillows. We didn’t say that good (or decent) ideas came cheap.

Who has a dad that doesn’t love James Bond? This Father’s Day get your pops a gift that would be fit for 007 himself. The Hidden Camera Neck Tie hides a high resolution color camera. High res, as in 768 x 492 – which isn’t too shabby for such a miniscule camera. The camera can be connected to a Pocket DVR. Ok, so it is kind of pricey at $209, but it’s a heck of a lot cooler than that tie you were going to buy him anyway.

Here is one piece of chocolate that won’t cause you to gain calories Or rather you can use it to figure out how many calories you’ve been accumulating. The Chocolate Calculator is spectacularly disguised like a piece chocolate bar very reminiscent of Hershey’s classic chocolate bar. However this one measures 2.5″ w x 4″ H. The Chcocolate Calculator, or as we like to call it, the Choculator retails for just $8.00.
While there haven’t been that many of them all together, cell phone wrist watches have never really taken off. Is it because their too geeky? Nah. We think it’s because most of them lack a dedicated keypad. The CECT WRIST is a wrist watch mobile phone with a dedicated keypad built on to its strap. The GSM phone also features a small 1.3″ TFT Touch screen, bluetooth, an FM radio, MP4 and 3GP video support, a WAP browser, an equalizer for playing MP3 files, a Voice recorder, calculator, and its memory can be expanded via Transflash cards. Granted the “Cect Wrist” phone is not a brand name, but with its wrist strap keypad, it does make those Dick Tracy fantasies a little bit more feasible. The phone retails for ₤151.57.

A common problem for Hello Kitty fans lusting after Hello Kitty gadgets is the prices tend to be outrageous and hard to justify. However, once and a while we do discover some kittylicious bargains. The Hello Kitty 1.5″ Digital Photo Frame / MP3 Player supports MP3, WMA, and WAV files, and it can also play back AVI video files on its 1.5″ screen. Inside it’s got just 64mb of built-in storage but you can expand it via a SD/MMC slot. Matching headphones and a pink Hello Kitty ase are included as well. Not bad for $36.99. But grab it while it lasts since it’s an outlet item.

The Split THUMP from Oakley is another addition to the Oakley THUMP family of sunglasses with built-in MP3 Players. I for one was never a fan of the original THUMP. I felt they were extremely masculine looking and certainly would not be considered very attractive on any woman. The Split THUMP however is a more softer, unisex approach with the original concept in mind but this time the design is a little more woman friendly.

Seldom to geeks get to see their favorite shows portayed as real art – and no those resin statues don’t count as art. An artist, Deborah Sperber, decided to create unique pieces of art out of glimpses fro the original series and the Next Generation. But she didn’t just use old paint on a canvas, instead she pieced together the iconic shots with beads and spools of threads – pretty ingenious if you ask us. For example there is the “Holodeck” made out of 9,600 spools and than there is “Transporter: Spock and Kirk beaming In” made out of 150,00+ color faceted beads. Even if you can’t afford one of these geeky works of art, perhaps you’ll be able to catch them on exhibition in your town. A recent exhibit ran at the Caren Golden Fine Art Gallery in NYC back in April. (Source: Geek Monthly, May ‘08)

Forget the Flip Video or even the Flip Video Ultra, Vivitar’s new DVR-565HD is super cheap and more powerful. The camcorder can record MPeg-4 H.264 videos in 720p at 30 frames per second, plus it can also snap 5 megapixel cameras. Oh, and it will also play MP3s. With just 32MB built-in, You’ll have to bring your own memory, but SD cards are cheap nowadays. And for just $129.99, the fact that the device is just a bit over 1 inch thick when closed and has a swivel display, it almost seems to good to be true.

The Nokia 7900 Crystal Prism is a fashion phone with a truly unique style the likes we haven’t seen anywhere else. The Crystal Prism is special edition of the 7900 Prism phone that has been designed in partnership with French designer Frederique Daubal who designed special accessories and wallpapers especially for the Crystal Prism. Like most of Nokia’s other model running Nokia’s S40 5th Edition, the OS on the Nokia Prism is easy to use, fast and responsive. The 7900 also features an OLED 240×320 display that is really easy on the eyes, very colorful and is very much a pleasure to use. It even makes watching videos and viewing pictures bare-able despite the screen being relatively small for that sort of thing.

Did you just get out of a bad relationship but managed to hold on to some of the bling that you obtained during the relationship? You’re not giving it back to him, so why not sell it. Ex-BoyfriendJewelry.com lets you buy, sell, and trade the unwanted jewels. And the site also gives you the opportunity to rant about the bozo who gave you the jewelry. “I’m selling this to pay off the jewelry account my fiance opened in my name FOR ANOTHER WOMAN!! MEN!!” (Source: People, May 26th 2008)

It’s taken over 20 years to arrive but you can finally purchase a Flux Capacitor, well a replica of one anyway. Yeh, we’re talking about the Flux Capacitor from Back to the Future that served as the heart of the De Lorean time machine. The replica comes with a certificate of authenticity and care instructions. But the big question is does it really work? For $275.00 we’d expect it too.
Can’t decide what to get your favorite pink gadget lover? Why not get her everything. The Girls Just Wanna’ Have Fun GeekKit comes with the Gadget Girl 300K Digital Camcorder that doubles as a webcam, the Bratz Rock Angelz Recording Studio Playset, a cute little Pink Radio Control Car complete with flashlights and sound effects, a bunch of multicolor LED bracelets, the 1GB Lasonic MP-01GS MP3 Player that supports WMA and MP3 files and has an FM radio, a pink foldable dust and water resistant keyboard and a matching 3 button PS/2 optical mouse that lights up red and purple when plugged in. This whole package costs just $64.50. Granted some of these items are a bit kiddish, but overall we like its concept and the price tag.

Oddly enough, this isn’t the first time we’ve come across USB keys designed like food. For example Vavolo has a whole selection of “freshly Baked” USB keys. Here are two more similar USB keys of the 1GB flavored variety. First up is a Strawberry USB key and next is a Pizza USB key, each retails for a pricey $50, which is significantly more than Vavolo’s baked goods where they also happen to have a flash-based pizza slice.

Services like MP3Tunes.com are awesome for music fiends because they let you access and listen to your music from any web browser. However a common pitfall of MP3Tunes.com, Anywhere.fm and similar services is that in order to get up an running, you first have to upload all of your music files to the service, which can be both a time and bandwidth consuming process. That is why Jukefly is so welcome. The service lets you play your music collection without having to upload everything first. Instead Jukefly connects directly to your computer and streams it directly to the internet browser you are currently using. Of course there is a catch – your computer at home will have to be turned on for this to work. Oh, and one more sort of catch – Jukefly is currently not Mac compatible. Dang.

Despite the fact that floppy disks only held mere kilobytes of data, we still have fond memories of them. Nowadays they are unfortunately just about useless, but are rather iconic items. Supermandolini has a set of 6 Soft Sector glass coasters that are designed just like those floppy disks of yore. The colorful coasters are made of a vinyl top with a gloss finish and foam base. The Soft Sector coasters retail for €27.00.

What could be considered the Academy Awards of watches, Casio kicked off their 25 year celebration of their G-Shock line with a red carpet gala. Sure people were there from the music and fashion industry, and many came to see Mr. Kanye West (more on that later) and Spike Lee whom are both big fans of G-Shock. To us though the stars of the show were the watches and after everyone showed their admission bracelets (in the likeness of a G-Shock watch) for entry and settled in to their seats for the press conference, that is when the fun started. Casio gave a brief history of how the line was created with a very cute slideshow of images. G-Shock watches from the past, present and future flashed in front of us. They also startled us by dropping a bundle of watches from the 30 foot (or so) ceiling on to the floor of the stage. Then they introduced Spike Lee as an “icon of street culture” and as well as a collaborator on a short film celebrating G-Shock’s 25th anniversary. The presentation concluded with the newest additions to the G-Shock line were introduced:

Forget getting a bunk bed from Ikea, you want something original and exciting? Something that your kids (or maybe yourself) will really want to sleep on? Then consider the Space Shuttle Bunk Bed which looks like, you guessed it – a bunk bed built in to a Space Shuttle. But it isn’t just a bunk bed, it’s also an indoor playhouse with a side door, cockpit and ladder – you can even add an additional wing for $175 and customize it with a specific color pattern as well. Add Some Buzz Lightyear Stickers, maybe a Captain Kirk poster and you’ll be the coolest geek on the block. The Bunk bed costs $2600 and takes 6 to 8 weeks to be delivered.

We’ve seen a few USB powered calculators here and there but we’re especially digging this one because it also works as a 4 port USB hub. On top of that it’s also available in hot pink (you know how we love hot pink), white, or black. For $16.00 the USB Calculator Hub is an affordable Father’s Day gift for the dad who is too lazy to run the calculator app on his computer.
