Kodak Zi6 Pocket Video Camera Review

By Ali

September 17th, 2008

zi6 300x225 Kodak Zi6 Pocket Video Camera ReviewI think I can safely say when you look back in the future to the late 2000s, you’ll agree that it was the You Tube era. Whether it’s captured from your cellphone or video camera, not even an hour later its on You Tube or Vimeo. Kodak is making it even easier to record your footage and get it up on You Tube with the Kodak Zi6 and we where lucky enough to get a chance to put it through its paces.

Design:
The version of the Kodak Zi6 we got to review is pink, appropriate we think. The Kodak Zi6 is also available in black for those that may not dig pink as much. The design is very compact and light to hold. It’s not bulky at all and can easily slip into your jacket pocket or pocket book. The front of the device has a bright 2.4 color LCD screen and controls to either take a still picture or record video. However in bright sunlight the display is hard to see. The center of the unit has a joystick which we will get into more detail later on. On the left side of the device are two inputs one for AV the other for HD component. Kodak also provides the cables for both which is a nice touch. On the left side you will also find the USB 2.0 connector hiding. On the right side of the device there is the slot cover that is hiding the SD slot, battery cover, and a switch to enable normal or extreme closeups for images. The top of the Zi6 is the switch to turn the device on. The back of the Zi6 has the lens, a button to eject the USB connector, and the speaker. Everything is really placed in strategic places that make...

Hands-on with FreeAgent Go and FreeAgent Desk Drives

By Chip Chick

September 16th, 2008

freeagentgo 300x225 Hands on with FreeAgent Go and FreeAgent Desk DrivesWe got to take a look at Seagate’s new FreeAgent line-up in person today. Our impressions of all of the hard drives are that they are very slick. The FreeAgent Go Drive in particular is super slim and it also feels very lightweight. It’s a wonder that you can carry around 500GB in one of these things. If desk space is an issue and you don’t require all the available connections in the FreeAgent Desk Drive versions, get the FreeAgent Go. You’ll hardly know it’s on your desk or in your bag. The FreeAgent Go Drive for Mac is a little thicker because it accommodates a Firewire 800 port, but for some Mac users like myself – the extra thickness is worth it in order to have the Firewire 800 connection. The FreeAgent Go for Mac also comes with a carrying case and dock, while the FreeAgent Go does not. However you can purchase the dock and case for FreeAgent Go for $29.
For people looking for lots and lots of storage, the FreeAgent Xtreme Drive and FreeAgent Desk Drive offer bigger capacities (up to 1.5TB), and the Xtreme comes with eSata and Firewire 400 ports. They both come with stands or you can stack them up flat on top of one each other.  The FreeAgent Desk Drive for Mac can’t be stacked up but it does come with FireWire 800/400 ports for Mac users.

September 16th, 2008

srseries 300x225 ECOJOHN SR is the Litter Box for Adults As a society, now more than ever we are looking for more green ways of living. Cutting back on gas and being more energy efficient is one way many people are tackling this issue. One natural resource that many have overlooked is the conservation of water. The ECOJOHN Sr incinerating toilet, is one of the first waterless toilets. Almost similar to a litter box for a cat, the waste you deposit incinerates into sterile ash that can be emptied a few times a year. What makes your poopy become ash is the 5kW propane burner attached this throne. After you finish attaching the chimney looking stack pipe to your bowl you’re ready to use it. The only water it contains is about a quart to keep the bowl clean by pressing the rinse button on the bowl.  You’ll have to contact them directly to request prices and in the end it may be cheaper just to use the bathroom at McDonalds.

typewriter 300x225 Retro Olivetti Typewriter For Those Who Miss Using White Out

We might be spoiled with our Macs and PCs but back in the day there was no fancy schmancy computer or laptop to type on, only the simple typewriter. It required a lot of patience and loads of white out in between jamming the keys. So if you miss those frustrating days of yore or if you’re just into anything retro, you may like the Olivetti Manual Typewriter. Get ready to hear the “click” noise you so fondly remember when you were being written up in Elementary school for running. The Olivetti Manual Typewritter is 100 years old and is easily “portable” with its plastic housing and carrying case. The typewriter retails for $140 at Urban Outfitters. A small price to pay for what may the be the next epic novel you could be typing on this thing; Microsoft Word me damned.

By Chip Chick

September 12th, 2008

peekemail 300x225 Peek Review The Simple & Cheap E mail DeviceThe Peek is a new dedicated email device that isn’t revolutionary technologically, but it aims to be revolutionary in a different way. It’s the first wireless device to offer email on the go for a cheap pay as you go price that doesn’t require a complicated contract. The Peek runs on T-mobile’s network and can be used anywhere in the U.S. for just $19.99 a month. You can enter your credit card number directly from the Peek for billing. No credit check or sell your soul contract required.

Design:
The Peek is compact and pretty slim, it’s just a little thinner than my 1G iPhone, yet it is wider and shorter. The peek is lightweight at just 3.8 ounces and comfortable to hold in your hand. The front of the peek is covered in a rubbery finish which also covers the keys. There are no gaps between the keys and the devices, so you don’t have to worry about crumbs and dirt falling through, and it should probably be spill resistant to a certain extent as well. – That is something to keep in mind if you are going to be giving this device to a kid to use. The keyboard is comfortable to use and provides pretty good tactile feedback. It’s keys illuminate when pressed which is great when you’re using the peek in areas with dark lighting.

Streetline Notifies Drivers of Available Parking Spaces via Their Phone

By Chip Chick

September 12th, 2008

streetline 300x225 Streetline Notifies Drivers of Available Parking Spaces via Their PhoneIn the not too distant future you’ll be able to find parking with your cell phone. Streetline networks, a tech firm, is working with the city of San Francisco to install sensors that will alert drivers when parking spots become available. The project will cost a whopping 95 million dollars and it will just cover 25% of the city’s parking spaces. Part of the purpose behind this project is to relieve traffic congestion by eliminating the need for cars to continuously circle looking for parking. Drivers can find out about available spaces via their smartphones and street signs, and eventually they’ll be able to pay for parking spaces via their phones as well. While we’re not sure we’d want our city budget spent on something like this, the concept does sound very helpful. However we’re pretty sure this system will never show up in New York because here the city wants you to park in an illegal spot just so that you can pile up on the ticket violations. Really, they do. Cardo S-2 Bluetooth Stereo Headset Review

By Chip Chick

September 11th, 2008

cardo 300x225 Cardo S 2 Bluetooth Stereo Headset ReviewI rarely use Bluetooth headsets, I don’t care for them really since they are always in one ear and tend to fall out of it regardless of the design.  However when I got a chance to review the Cardo S-2 Stereo Bluetooth Headset, I was more enticed by the fact it actually resembled a a pair of normal headphones.

Design:
The Cardo S-2 is a compact pair of Bluetooth headphones that easily twist into a travel friendly shape without fear that they will break.  All the functions of the headset are on the right ear cup. The Bluetooth pairing button, controls for the music (play/pause), volume control, and the USB input for the charger. There is also a tactile area on the ride side that allows you to have songs go forward or reverse. When slipped on your head the headset fits comfortably because of the addition of rubbery wings that hook onto the top part of your ear for extra support. However since I have long hair I didn’t feel that it was secure enough and that it was slipping off. So I would keep readjusting it. I finally put my hair up in a pony tail and it stayed much better…When it was on my head reaching the controls was easy enough I only had to take it off a few times because I pressed the wrong button. After a few minutes I got the hang of it.

alarm clock 272x300 Sam Hechts Jetlag Travel Alarm Clock, Manuals Not Included

For those who just want a simple alarm clock, then you may like Sam Hecht’s newest innovative design for Idea International in Japan. Sam Hecht; famous for his LaCie Little Disk hard drive has now designed something even better, the Jetlag Travel Alarm Clock. The clock was created because of Hecht’s frustration of setting an alarm while traveling. It is a simple design that many would probably be like why didn’t we think of that?! While most companies jump on the iPod/clock docking systems. Hecht has actually decided to go back to basics and make an alarm clock simple again, without needing stereo instructions to operate it.
