We saw a ton of super cheap netbooks at CES and now they are slowly but surely creeping into stores. Geeks.com has the Alpha 400 MIPS Netbook for only $169.99. Yes, the specs are a bit meager: 400 MHZ, 128MB ram, Linux OS, and 1GB of flash storage. But for this price what do you expect? The 7 inch screen size is half decent and it comes with an office assistant program that is very barebones. Because you know MS Office is never going to be able to run on this thing. This netbook has also got nothing on the likes of the other more expensive notebooks running Atom processors. Still this is a great starter computer for your 5 year old or perhaps it can serve as a kitchen PC? Either way, expect to see more and more of these super cheap netbooks showing up, and dont be suprised if a $100 netbook with similar specs shows up soon as well.

You know, Chick, I think so much of these — Alpha 400, HiVision, Razorbook, and the other cheapskate laptops — that I have started a blog on them, on the 400-MHz MIPS machines like the one you reviewed.
My blog: http://www.alpha-400.com. These PC really are a whole new category. I think you will agree that Asus has gotten away from its original concept of a $200 laptop. The 400s are going to take over the low-price range for a while. The big deal here is that the bottom range rules. If the floor goes down, the price of all laptops and notebooks comes down.
This is unstoppable, cheaper, simpler computers. Most people use even less of their computer’s power than they do of their own brainpower.

Looking at the specs, you’ll regret this. Sure it’s more modern than a OLPC, but to spend the extra money and get an Asus eeepc if you want something that’s going to actually do a little more ?
