There are plenty of audio recording attachments available for the iPod, and there are also audio recording apps available for the iPod touch. But if you are serious about recording audio and you want to use your iPod to do so, than the Alesis ProTrack Stereo Recorder is the closest thing you have to a pro solution. All you have to do is dock your iPod in to the device and cover it with the attached protective clear shield, and you’ll be ready to start recording in the field. The device lets you record 16-bit, 44.1kHz or 22kHz stereo digital audio without connecting any additional equipment. Additionally, the device’s on-board mics are configured for optimal stereo imaging, and the ProTrack has a pair of combo XLR-1/4″ inputs – should you wnat to connect something like a condenser mic. The ProTrack even supplies 48v phantom power to connected condenser mics. The device also has LED level metering so that you can monitor your recordings. Overall, with the ProTrack you get all the features you would expect in a serious audio recording device, except that this one happens to let you record on to your iPod. The Alesis Pro Track Stereo Recorder for iPod is compatible with the iPod Classic, iPod 5G, iPod Touch and even the iPod Nano 3G. It retails for $199.
