I inserted my 4gb Eye-Fi SD Memory Card into my Canon S90 Digital Camera and I am never taking it out. Ever. The Eye-Fi memory card will automatically and wirelessly transfer all of your new pictures (and even videos) from your camera to your computer using WiFi connectivity. It will work with any camera that uses an SD memory card. You can finally put an end to the arduous task of connecting your camera to the computer and manually uploading photos. Let Eye-Fi take care of that for you.
It was all too common for me to have photos sitting on my camera for weeks before putting forth the effort of transferring to them to my computer. At that point I always wonder: does it even make sense sharing these photos with my friends? It’s sunny outside and all of my pictures are out in the snow. I could not be happier with this genius SD card; Eye-Fi solved my problem (and my Mom’s problem too).
Eye-Fi seamlessly transferred all of my new pictures much quicker than expected. It transferred almost 1 image per second (using 5 megapixel images). I was even able to take it one step further and selectively upload images to my picasa account. Straight from my camera to the internet within seconds (and no computer required) = So Cool.
Currently there are 4gb and 8gb models of Eye-Fi SD card available, but these storage capacities are almost irrelevant with the “Endless Memory” feature. Your Eye-Fi card will automatically free up space on your card after it has transferred the image to your computer. You can set the threshold to a percentage. So when the card is, let’s say, 70% full it will begin removing the oldest photos that have already been transferred to the computer. No effort on your part; it could not be easier!
Now, the technical details….
Eye-Fi is a wireless SD memory card with up to 8GB of class 6 memory. It has built in 802.11n WiFi. Eye-Fi can remember up to 32 different WiFi networks. It works with any SDHC capable camera and requires a wireless router (or even a portable wireless modem like the Verizon My-Fi). You need to set up the Eye-Fi Center software; works with Mac (OSX 10.5 or 10.6) or PC (XP, Vista, 7). Eye-Fi comes with a USB SD card reader which is used to set up the card for use with any wireless network. It supports Static WEP 64/128, WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK WiFi security. It has a wireless range of 90ft+ outdoors and 45ft+ indoors. With Online Sharing, your Eye-Fi card effortlessly and automatically uploads your memories to one of over 25 photo sharing, print, blogging or social networking websites (or even your own FTP or FTPs) including: Flickr, Picasa, MobileMe, and Facebook. Online Sharing is included as a lifetime, unlimited service with all X2 cards. Eye-Fi is available in four flavors (two 4gb and two 8gb), all of which offer the features mentioned in this post. In addition to capacity, the cards vary by the additional features they offer. These features include Geotagging, Hotspot access, Ad Hoc Transfers, and the ability to upload RAW formats. Check out the comparison chart.
Conclusion: If you have a camera which uses an SD card, this almost seems like a no brainer. It starts at just $49.99 for a 4gb card, and with ‘endless memory mode’ you’ll never run out of storage space. Should you choose to not take advantage of any of these amazing wireless features, the Eye-Fi SD card still functions as a regular SD card no matter how you connect it to the computer. Don’t forget Mothers Day is right around the corner, the Eye-Fi SD card could be just what Mom needs to easily share pictures with her loved ones.
Good: transferring images to your computer becomes effortless, price, endless memory
Bad: Geotagging does not come standard
