When most people think about external storage, they yawn. Another way to store and backup information, it seems like every external hard drive is the same. Wrong. With the introduction of Seagate’s new series of GoFlex storage solutions, even non-believers will be intrigued by the line of external drives that add a level of flexibility and speed to the way you work and play on your computer. The line of GoFlex external hard drives are designed to store exchange information between computers or the Internet, either wirelessly or by physically plugging the devices in. At the center of the line is the GoFlex ultra portable hard drive. What makes this GoFlex drive different is the fact that it features interchangeable adapters and a plug-and-play design to adapt to any interface or device being used. The hard drive makes it easy to connect to multiple ports including USB 3.0, eSATA or FireWire 800 connections by simply switching out the cable adapter. The device itself pulls apart to reveal multiple ways to connect the hard drive to whichever computer you may be using. What makes this feature important is the fact that you can seemlessly switch between USB 2.0 computers and USB 3.0 computers as well as PC and Macs. That means you could be working on a project on your PC at work and easily access all the stored information on your home Mac. The headache of reformatting and creating partitions that are specific for a PC or Mac are no longer there. This is unlike traditional external hard drives that require you to take the time to format the drive with a special partition so that it works with both a PC and Mac.
“GoFlex interface cables are about providing the speed, performance and connectivity people need to support their interaction with their digital content. The explosive growth of video capture and multimedia collecting is expanding personal digital libraries to terabytes worth of content within the home,” said Dave Mosley, executive vice president, Sales, Marketing and Product Line Management at Seagate. “These trends are driving demand for high-capacity, high-performance storage. The GoFlex family of storage products meets this need by delivering simple, USB 2.0 storage and backup devices, with the flexibility to adapt as interface technology advances by using the various GoFlex cables and accessories to access content stored on the same drive.”
Besides just the connectivity and ease of switching information between computers, as part of the line Seagate announced its GoFlex Net media sharing device, which transforms a GoFlex ultra-portable drive (or any other external hard drive for that matter) into a way to access content outside of their home using a PC, iPad, iPod Touch, Android, iPhone, BlackBerry or any other internet enabled device. You can easily access and share files stored on the device and it even integrates with social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, and it publishes RSS feeds. This device is the ultimate way to store, stream, and ultimately share content on a home network including your GoFlex TV HD media player. What the GoFlex TV HD media player does is makes it easy to store all your content such as movies, pictures, and files, and to access them on a TV in high definition 1080p. Once you connect the GoFlex TV HD media player to the Internet using an Ethernet cable or optional Wi-Fi adapter, you can access and stream digital content from a home network or popular online service providers such as Netflix, YouTube, MediaFly, Picasa, etc. It’s an easy way to access digital content like movies from your TV. Versatility, portability, and speed are the name of the game when it comes to the line of GoFlex products.
What I like about these products is the fact that they are at the same price point as other external hard drives, yet offer a boatload of additional features like sharing, accessing digital content, and switching between PCs and Macs seamlessly. The GoFlex line keeps the consumer in mind by offering a GoFlex ultra portable hard drive starter kit with multiple accessories and additional cables sold separately so the consumer doesn’t have to rebuy what they don’t need.
