iRobot might be best known for their Roomba vacuum cleaners, but the company has many other sophisticated robotics projects. In this case, they’ve turned to their Seagliders to help Gulf researchers see what is going on beneath the water’s surface by helping detect and map leaking oil in the Gulf of Mexico. The unmanned Seaglider has sensors on it which are able to report all kinds of useful data such as the level of dissolved oxygen in the water and the presence of oil all the way down to 1,000 meters (3,280 feet). The Navy is also using some of these Seagliders to capture and monitor samples far below the water’s surface in the Gulf of Mexico.
