We recently got some hands-on time with the latest offering from Zumreed, the X2 Hybrid Headphones. On the eye they seem like another pair of boring, yet cool looking headphones but get a little closer and they are altogether something different. The X2 Hybrid lets you switch back and forth between them being headphones or external speakers. So when you get tired of them sitting on your ears, just rotate the cuffs, flip a switch and they become external speakers. The outside of portion of the earcups functions as the external speaker and the interior earcups function as a normal pair of headphones. The drivers are 40mm in regards to headphone power. As speakers they output 0.5 watts. Those might be considered pathetic specs but honestly when I got a chance to listen to them, they weren’t half bad considering that it functions as two devices. When used as a speaker it needs to be charged and will operate for 4 hours on a 1 hour charge. Lastly the Hybrids come with a 3.5mm stereo gold plated plug and a 6.3mm stereo plug. Expect the X2 Hybrid Headphones to hit retailers around May and retail for $165. I anticipate these will probably make its way to places like Audio Cubes and other retailers that typically carry Zumreed products.
