Dish Network has gone ahead and purchased Blockbuster Inc. for $320 million at auction. This is a pretty surprising move, considering that Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy last September.
So what exactly does Dish Network plan to do with Blockbuster? It’s too soon to tell, but apparently they plan on leveraging Blockbuster’s recognizable brand, and vast amount of store locations to their advantage somehow. Not that we have any Blockbuster locations near us, they have all gone out of business.
“With its more than 1,700 store locations, a highly recognizable brand and multiple methods of delivery, Blockbuster will complement our existing video offerings while presenting cross-marketing and service extension opportunities for Dish Network,” Tom Cullen, an executive vice president at the company, said in a statement. “While Blockbuster’s business faces significant challenges, we look forward to working with its employees to re-establish Blockbuster’s brand as a leader in video entertainment.”
