It’s a useful app, it’s free, and it saves gas. What’s not to like? ShopSavvy, now on version 1.3, is a pretty simple barcode scanning app for Windows 7 phones. Scanning is actually a bit of a misnomer, though – you really take a picture of a barcode, and the app identifies the product and finds the best local and online prices available. The local price feature promises to be even more effective with a recent update to GPS and location functionality. Of course, since you’re relying on a picture, you’ll need to have a steady hand – fuzzy pictures might not be read, or could be misread, so take due caution there. When you do get it to work, ‘s a great alternative to driving around for hours and doing comparison shopping the old-fashioned way. After all, with gas prices the way they are, filling up your tank is going to kill all the savings you’d get through comparison shopping, so why not do it all from your phone?
