So You Want to Buy Mom a Tablet for Mother's Day
So instead of the traditional Mother’s Day brunch and flowers, you want to take a risk and get your mom a tablet for Mother’s Day, because eReaders were sooo last year.
First ask yourself these few questions:
- Are you ready to explain what it is you actually got her? (This may or may not pertain to some mothers).
- Do you have time to take out atleast 3 hours of your day, everyday, for the next two weeks to help her learn how to use her tablet?
- Are you ready to constantly repeat “you are pressing too hard on the screen, you don’t have to press so hard!”
- Are you willing to endure the many questions, like: “Why did you pick this one over that one?”
- Finally, be prepared to hear over and over “You spent sooo much… return it!” ( I know my mother would never say that, but her perhaps your kindly mother might).
Ok, so you can deal with all that, now on to which tablets might be perfect for your Mom this Mother’s Day.
Apple iPad 2
Ok let’s start with the obvious. Everyone and their mother knows about the iPad 2. There are billboards, commercials, whole websites bowing down to this tablet. But should you get it for your mom?
Well first things first, make sure mom has a computer with the latest version of iTunes installed. You can’t be at her disposal every time there is an update to iOS or when the iPad needs to sync. So she will have to learn how to do this on her own (after you’ve shown her how of course). You’ll also want to keep in mind whether or not she really needs 3G capabilities, and how much storage she will need on her iPad. If she lives in a weak AT&T signal area, then you should probably get a Verizon 3G iPad instead. And if you know mom is a hoarder, perhaps a 64GB model would be best.
Because as much as the preloaded apps on the iPad are enjoyable, nothing says mom fun like a great cooking app – my personal fave is epicurious. Mom would also love a good shopping app to start off with – perhaps Zappos. Skype is also a must, so she can pester you even more, and Angry Birds – you can thank me for this last suggestion later, just enjoy the silence. Mom will have an abundance of apps to choose from once she gets the hang of the App Store, just remind her that the apps are all not free and she shouldn’t spend her retirement money (or Atlantic City money) on apps.
There are tons of accessories for the iPad 2 out already. Recently, M-Edge collaborated with Out of Print clothing and created iPad cases using imagery from classic novels. There is also the funky Andy Warhol collection, which should remind your mother of her youth – before you. Lastly, there are always the high-end cases for the more posh mom.

The best thing about the iPad 2 is that once mom is up and running, it’s practically dummy proof and your mom will be showing you what she is doing on her iPad in no time. The biggest bummer of the iPad 2 though is the camera quality. If mom thinks she can turn the iPad 2 into a new way of capturing Kodak moments, then she will be ultimately disappointed by its camera quality. Lastly, if you want an iPad 2 – you better start hustling right now! Most Best Buy stores are out of stock, and stock at Apple stores is also very limited too.
Ok, so your mom is a rebel who doesn’t follow the IT crowd. Instead she is really taken with those snazzy Motorola XOOM commercials featuring hunky guys doing awesome things with a tablet. Should you get it for your mom?
You’ll need to make sure that mom is ready for the robust undertaking of Google’s Android 3.0 OS. This isn’t the child’s play iOS on the iPad. However, if mom loves her flash websites which tend to be mostly fashion or real estate sites – then she will love the XOOM because the iPad, as we all know, doesn’t do flash sites. Again you will also want to determine if mom needs a WiFi or WiFi and 3G version. Something else to keep in mind, is that the XOOM’s design offers a good grip, which is good if your mom tends to get sweaty palms. Also its 10.1” display is even larger than the iPad’s display, which is great for some older eyes.
Android 3.0 apps are slowly but surely trickling in and even though there aren’t nearly as many as the App Store offers – that shouldn’t deter you from considering this tablet for your mom.
Yes, cases are few and far between for the XOOM. The most exciting one you may get is a silicone case or black leather portfolio case. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get a snazzy looking skin for the XOOM. MusicSkins has got the XOOM covered. You can design a custom skin with an image of yourself that will make mom smile, or you can choose among the many other pop culture images they have available.

The XOOM is certainly no slouch. It’s camera quality is better than the iPad and it’s pretty fast too boot. The Honeycomb OS may take some time for Mom to get used too but with your tech savvy knowledge – Mom will be swiping and multitasking in no time. That said, it’s also easier to find one since there are no talked about XOOM stock shortages.
Samsung GALAXY Tab
So is your Mom the type that likes options – Well the Samsung GALAXY Tab comes in three different sizes that would appeal to those Mom’s who likes choices that go from big to small. The thing is – which one is just right for your mom?
The Samsung GALAXY Tab comes in three different sizes: 7”, 8.9” and 10.1.” How do you choose which one is right? Well be observant about your mother’s likes and dislikes. Does she get excited by small charms or diamonds the size of the late Elizabeth Taylor’s Krupp diamond. Because you know if you don’t choose the right size you’ll be faced with “I wish I had the bigger one.” or “ this is too big for me – the smaller one would have been good enough.” All three tablets are running Android. Unfortunately the 8.9″ and 10.1″ Tabs haven’t been released yet, which means mom would have to get a rain check for those two.
Once again apps are dependent on what’s currently available in the Android marketplace – which isn’t much, but you can still load up mom’s GALAXY Tab with enough fun apps to keep her entertained for awhile.
The Samsung GALAXY Tab actually has more accessories than the other non-iOS tabs. There are cases from Case Mate… and just like the XOOM you can get skins from MusicSkins, GelaSkins and the like.

The Samsung Tab is almost as well known as the iPad, and it is actually more popular across the pond then it is here. Also, available stock is pretty easy to find for the 7″ Tab.
T-Mobile G-Slate with Google
Is your mom always in hurry? Well the T-Mobile G-Slate might be perfect for her, as it is one of the few tablets on the market that packs in 4G speeds.
Do you really like T-Mobile? Does your mom live in an area with good T-Mobile coverage? Well, they will become your new carrier if you purchase this tablet in order to take advantage of its 4G speeds. Also, it’s important to make sure you can even get good 4G where your mom lives, or it will be a wasted feature. This tablet also comes running the Android 3.0 OS. Its display measures 8.9”, and it can even play back 3D video. None of the other tablets can do that at the moment.
Pick your poison in the Android marketplace.
Pretty slim at the moment, except for what you can get from T-Mobile directly.
GOOD TABLET FOR MOM?
The T-Mobile G-Slate with Google is pretty much as future proof as you are going to get right now. Mom can surf at lightning fast 4G speeds and even watch a 3D movie – what more could she ask for. However, you’ll have to find a authorized T-Mobile dealer or T-Mobile official store if you want to get your hands on one.
So your mom is a power mom… she juggled everything when you were young – a career, a household, and she still does. She is never too far from her BlackBerry and can beat you in an email thumb war. The BlackBerry PlayBook is exactly what this suit wearing mom needs.
If your mom is an executive… then you probably won’t need to show her how to use the PlayBook. As long as she follows the device’s quick start-up tutorial. The fact that the PlayBook can bridge to her BlackBerry will probably make her rub her hands together in delight. It’s 7″ display size will also be attractive since it won’t weigh her down while she is carrying around her laptop and files.
Apps for the BlackBerry Playbook are practically slim to none at the moment, but a great Facebook App was just released and a video chat app and email apps are on the way too.
There is the super cool DODOcase for the PlayBook which provides the device with a professional yet educated look. Also there are several PlayBook cases from BlackBerry that are simple and plain and will fit in with the other suits at a conference table.

The executive mom is all about getting her work done efficiently at all hours of the night and maybe letting her hair down on the weekends. The BlackBerry PlayBook will certainly accomplish these tasks of being a busy beaver during the week and letting her chill out with the now launched Facebook app on the weekends. The PlayBook is currently available at BestBuy and many other retailers, in fact you should have no trouble getting one at all.
So which tablet are you going to get Mom?
