iPhone App of the Week: Meporter – All the News that You See Fit to Print

Once CNN’s iReport came into existence, apps like Meporter were going to hit eventually. Meporter does exactly what you probably think it does – it lets you be the reporter of any news story. What qualifies as news? Anything you decide is newsworthy. Basically, you take a picture or shoot a video of a significant local event or news story, make a headline, confirm your location, and write a short blurb about the story that is posted to Meporter, Facebook, Twitter, Digg, and any other social networking sites you use. If you see that someone else beat you to the punch, you can comment on their story and provide updates. If this sounds absolutely no different than anything you could just do on Facebook, keep this in mind – you can earn sweet press badges if you unlock certain achievements on Meporter! If that’s not worth the free price of admission, I don’t know what is.

  1. actually you can do more. you can categorize by topic and let everyone read your news posts. you can search by location too

  2. Difference from Facebook:  The story can by viewed by anyone within the vicinity who might be affected by it, unlike Facebook where only a user’s circle of friends can see it.   The reach of posts with Meporter is geographically driven, not relationship driven…although you can follow / friend people.
