And now, on to our Holiday gift Guide for Kids 2011.
The holiday season is just around the corner, and with prime shopping time just a week away, you need to know about the hottest toys and games out this year. Find just the right thing for your little guy or girl below – who knows, you might just get a Nintendo 64-caliber reaction. OK, maybe that’s a little extreme, but they’ll be really, really happy if they get something on this list. Happy hunting!
Mattel’s Fijit Friends
The singing, dancing, fidgeting Fijit Friends are sure to win points just for being adorable, but they also bring a level of interactivity that shows where toys could be headed in the future. You can choose between one of four Fijit Friends – each with a different color and personality. The soft-bodied Fijit Friends dance and jump around to whatever music is playing in the background, but can also can speak and respond by chatting and telling jokes. There is a list of phrases and words that the Fijit Friends will recognize and respond to, but sometimes you need to shout clearly for the little guys to pick up on it. That means the Fijit Friends might not be for the most impatient of kids, but for a child who doesn’t mind putting in the extra effort, a Fijit Friend could become their new best pal. You can grab a Fijit Friend off Amazon for $56.
Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Apptivity Case
This one might not be for the faint of heart, but if you trust your toddler with your beloved iPhone, give the Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Apptivity Case a shot. Don’t worry – your iPhone will be safe in the confines of this case made with toddlers in mind, featuring easy to grip plastic handles and rattlers. A clear film protects the screen from drool or grubby hands. Of course, the Apptivity Case is more than just a case – it comes with an app packed with songs, numbers, animals, and animal sounds. For a notch above $14 on Amazon, who knows – you might just get the See ‘n’ Say of the future.
Let’s Rock! Elmo
Sometimes, it seems like Elmo is the king of the holiday season. Every year, a new Elmo pops up that manages to wow kids even more than last year’s Elmo, and this year is no different. Take a look at Let’s Rock! Elmo, Elmo’s latest foray into the world of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Elmo moves and dances around depending on which instrument you give him – he comes with a microphone, a tambourine, and a drum set. Elmo can sing six songs, and automatically recognizes what instrument is put in his hands. And, like any good holiday toy, there are all sorts of extras you can buy that will work with Let’s Rock! Elmo, including a guitar and a keyboard. You and your kids can rock out with Elmo for $50 on Amazon.
3D Twister
3D Twister is unlike any other R/C racer you have seen before. This racer can do loops, back flips, half-pipe jumps, wheelle runs, and more! Grab the remote control and watch this R/C car entertain you with crazy stunts. 3D Twister from Silverlit Toys. The 3D Twister Basic Set retails for $49.99 and the 3D Twister Deluxe Set for $59.99.
Justin Bieber Tour Bus and Concert Stage
Bieber Fever affects all ages equally. There’s only one known cure – more Bieber. Cue the Justin Bieber Tour Bus and Concert Stage, featuring a doll version of the Biebs, a spinning dance stage, and a pop-out backstage lounge. Add an mp3 connection with a speaker, and you’ve got the ultimate Bieber experience right in your own living room – short of getting the real thing, anyway. You can cop the Justin Bieber Tour Bus and Concert Stage from Amazon for about $73 – wait, this is for your kids, right?
SpyNet Watch 2.0
Start bringing up the next James Bond by grabbing the SpyNet Watch 2.0 for your child this holiday season. The SpyNet Watch 2.0 looks like a big, bulky watch on the surface, but actually houses a night vision camera that can take stills, video, and time-lapse movies at 15 fps. The night vision on the watch is solid, and spy mode can be activated, which disguises the fact that the watch is recording by showing the time on the color screen. The secret missions can begin in earnest for about $39.99 of Amazon.
I Am T-Pain Mic
It’s always more fun with auto-tune. OK, maybe not always, but if your kids want to sound like the digitally enhanced pop stars of their day, the I Am T-Pain Mic is just the thing they need. The microphone can play three different beats and auto-tune your voice while you’re singing along to your favorite tunes. You can record your performances, then play them back or use a USB connection to upload them onto your computer. Auto-tune can be unleashed on your unsuspecting household for around $40.
V-Tech Innotab
Tablets are part of the wave of the future, but that doesn’t mean we should start giving our four-year-olds iPads to throw around. Instead, give them the V-Tech Innotab, a sturdy, safe, and kid-friendly tablet that will keep the young ones entertained for hours. In addition to being well-padded, the Innotab performs in many ways like a regular tablet, including an mp3 player, photo viewer, alarm clock, calculator, and calendar. As for specs, the Innotab features a 5” color LCD touch screen, a USB port, a headphone jack and an SD card slot. A stylus and kickstand are also included. Cartridge games, sold separately, are also available, and the Innotab also features a tilt sensor for motion-controlled games. There’s no unrestricted Internet access, so you won’t need to worry about your kids getting into anything untoward while they use the Innotab. You can grab the Innotab from Amazon for $79. Each cartridge game costs about $25 each.
Pirates of the Caribbean LEGO
LEGO sets are always winners during the holiday season. This year, your kids can build a couple of ships from the Pirates of the Caribbean series with two new LEGO sets – the Black Pearl and Queen Anne’s Revenge. These are no ordinary LEGO sets, though. Both are massive, highly detailed models of those ships, and come with LEGO versions of the characters from the movies. The large size just means that the joy of building up a LEGO model will last for that much longer. Added bonuses are firing cannons, sails, and a turning helm. Sail the high seas LEGO style this holiday season. The Black Pearl is going for about $100, while the Queen Anne’s Revenge goes for about $120. That’s expensive for a LEGO set, but once you and your child see the finished product, you’ll see why it was worth it.
Barbie Hair Extensions
Barbie wants to get her hair done, and needs your kid’s help. The Barbie Designable Hair doll comes with barrettes and 16 blank hair extension templates. Kids can get on the Barbie Hair Extensions website and choose from pre-made hair designs, or create their own. Then, they can print out those hair extensions on the template and add them to Barbie. Who knows, next stop for your kid might be beauty school. The Barbie Designable Hair doll costs about $30 from Mattel’s website.
Disney Cars 2 AppMATes
When you think of playmats, the iPad might not exactly be the first thing that comes to mind. But, that’s just what it becomes with the Disney Cars 2 AppMATes. The AppMATes are real toy cars from the movie with built-in sensors that communicate with an iPad app. In the app, kids can use their toy cars on the iPad to compete in races, complete missions, and cruise around the virtual Cars 2 world. The cars are soft on the bottom, and won’t scuff up your iPad’s screen. The AppMATes come in packs of two, with each pack costing $22.50.
iPhone 4 Disney and Muppets Cases
Let’s not kid ourselves. There are pre-teens out there now who have iPhones. Maybe you have one. If you do, help them add some style to their iPhone 4 with one of these cases, based on the Muppets and Disney. Miss Piggy, Donald Duck, and Kermit are available, to name a few. Do take note that these cases are not compatible with the Verizon iPhone 4. Each case costs $30.
VIDEO GAMES
Sesame Street Once Upon a Monster
Once Upon a Monster is the first Sesame Street game for the Xbox 360 Kinect, and is a great opportunity for adults to get into the game with their kids. The storybook world is richly colored and detailed, and endearing characters both familiar and new are present at every turn. The LEGO series of video games have been known in the past for being surprisingly good. Rack up the points, and you can get better boards for Spongebob and Patrick. Spongebob’s Surf & Skate Roadtrip for Kinect costs about $47 off Amazon now.
EyePet & Friends
You didn’t forget about the PlayStation Eye camera, did you? It’s still alive and kicking, and better than ever thanks to the release of EyePet & Friends. Players can use the PlayStation Eye and the PlayStation Move to control their EyePets, playing games or performing tricks. You can foster your EyePet’s growth, while building new toys and outfits in the Creativity Center. Even better, now players can dual wield PlayStation Move controllers to control two EyePets at the same time. Once you’re done playing, you can upload achievements and connect with friends on the EyePet online community. EyePet & Friends is available now for the PlayStation 3, and sells for about $40 on Amazon.
Carnival Island
Carnival Island for the PlayStation 3 looks to be a family favorite this holiday season, providing a fun, light-hearted party game atmosphere that should be fun for everyone. 35 carnival-style games are available, with PlayStation Move controls allowing players to compete with accurate motion controls that will have everyone moving around and having fun. Players can earn tickets from playing games, which can be redeemed for prizes and adorable in-game pets. Get the party started this holiday season for about $40 off Amazon.
Family Game Night 4 – The Game Show
EA and Hasbro bring some of the most popular board games of all time to life in brand new ways in Family Game Night 4 – The Game Show. The whole family can participate in new twists on old classics, like Yahtzee Bowling or Connect 4 Basketball. Thanks to full motion controls from the Kinect, all the players will be part of the action. It’s a great way to get the whole family up off the couch and into action. A few other board game classics round out what should be a sure-fire hit this holiday season. You can buy Family Game Night 4 – The Game Show, for the Xbox 360 Kinect, for about $39 off Amazon.
Nicktoons MLB
Ever wondered who would win in a baseball game between Nickelodeon characters and MLB players? No? Well, if you’re wondering now, you and your kids can find out in Nicktoons MLB, which features 25 Nickelodeon characters and over 300 MLB players in an intergalactic competition for baseball supremacy. You can create tournaments, play exhibition games, or compete in home run derby-style mini-games with either regular Xbox controls or the motion-sensing Kinect. You can also travel to various Nickelodeon-themed ballparks, as well as some of the real world’s most iconic stadiums, like Fenway Park and Dodger Stadium. And, more importantly, the game features characters from the criminally underrated Invader Zim series, which is always nice to see. You and your kids can play ball with Nicktoons MLB for the Xbox 360 for about $30 off Amazon.
