Starting with the Nokia Lumia 800 phone, all Nokia smartphones released in the future will come pre-installed with MixRadio, an intelligent music streaming service powered by the Echo Nest, a company that develops intelligent music platforms for apps. There’s one other pretty big draw to MixRadio – it’s completely free.
When you first use your Lumia 800, MixRadio will scan your digital music library to get a sense of your taste in music to create a Taste Profile, which evolves over time as your digital library changes and grows. Based on the Taste Profile, MixRadio will generate a streaming radio station that will reflect all of your likes – you won’t be limited to one genre, or similar artists. If you wish to just jam to one genre, you can still make custom streaming stations on your own. MixRadio’s catalog is no joke, either, at 15 million songs and counting.
In addition to the intelligent streaming radio services, MixRadio users will have access to an mp3 store and will receive live concert recommendations in their area. The app will also feature 100 preset recommended stations, and will allow for 15 hours worth of music to be stored for offline playback.
The service will be available in 50 countries, and will gradually roll out starting now through the end of 2012. If you had your eye on the Lumia 800, which runs Windows Phone 7.5 and hits stores tomorrow, this one could put you over. MixRadio looks to be a top-notch streaming service, especially considering that a subscription is not necessary.
