At Mobile World Congress today, Fon announced a new wireless router that should make their Wi-Fi network better and faster. The Fonera Simpl features faster processing and, more importantly, EAP-based authentication. EAP is a universal authentication framework, making it much more easy and straightforward for Fon users to connect to other Fon wireless routers on the go.
Fon has quietly become the largest Wi-Fi network in the world, with 5 million hotspots worldwide. For those uninitiated, Fon provides free access to all users who purchase a Fon wireless router and subsequently agree to let other users use their home’s wireless signal. Paid access is available to those who do not want others to use their home signal.
Fonera Simpl EAP will be included in Fon’s offering package to mobile operators, and will be available in early fall of this year.
