At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today, Option announced what will be the world’s smallest 3G and Wi-Fi portable hotspot, called the XYFI. The flash drive-sized dongle is USB-powered and supports up to eight different devices. It should be especially useful for creating a 3G hotspot for a large group, though unfortunately, there is no support for 4G. The Wi-Fi functionality will likely only be useful in very few situations where there is a restriction on how many devices can connect to the Wi-Fi network directly (in some hotels, for example).
Battery life will be bolstered by a car charger, an AC adapter, and an extended battery pack, to keep your hotspot alive and well on the go.
Option should be making further announcements about pricing and availability in the next few weeks, but with 4G hotspots already on the market, let’s hope XYFI is planted squarely in the affordable price region.
