If you ever wanted to see a Van Gogh piece transform into a Pollock or a Rothko right before your eyes, you would do well to take a look at artCircles, a new app for the iPad. And, even if you haven’t had such thoughts, the app might be worth a look as a new way to experience art.

Rather than rely on static, museum-like presentation of works of art, artCircles serves up a feast for the eyes in the form of a 30-second video called “From Van Gogh to Rothko in 30 Seconds.” The film was made by Michael Langan, who curated works from a digital collection and melded them into smooth, continuous animation featuring works from Van Gogh, Rothko, Hokusai, Degas, and Renoir.

Aside from that, art can also be appreciated in the old-fashioned way, but in a digital setting. Instead of searching for specific works, though, artCircles introduces a new way to search for art – by color or by word. Enter one of the two, and the app will show you a piece of art associated with that color or word, in theory resulting in a work of art that fits your current mood or tastes. Searching is done by using the wheels in the app – there’s a color wheel, and a wheel dedicated to different curators who will provide their own unique curated collections.

Beautiful pieces of art sound like a great way to break in the new iPad’s Retina display, if you’re of the mind to purchase one of the new tablets. The artCircles app is available now for free on the iTunes App Store for the iPad.
