The English adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” became available as a DVD rental yesterday, creating a little confusion among Redbox customers along the way. Those renting the DVD on day one were surprised to see an apparently bootlegged disc in the DVD case, prompting Redbox to put up a notice to customers for clarification.
Turns out, the disc cover art is the same for everyone, shades of System of a Down’s 2002 “Steal this Album!” and its bootlegged appearance. It’s an appropriate look for “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” which follows a hacking-savvy heroine. It fits right into the vibe of the movie, and is a great nod to the illegal but integral part of the cyberculture that is piracy. Just don’t sweat it too much – no laws were broken in the making of this disc.
