It’s a common problem in the modern day household – and that is that there are too many smartphones lying around. The result is a tangle of charging cables everywhere. The IDAPT i4 Universal Charger / Charging Station aims to tackle this problem by allowing up-to four mobile devices to charge at once.
We’ve seen this concept before with the Fuse PowerSlice. However, the IDAPT i4 has a very different rectangular design. Available in a choice of white or black, the IDAPT4 looks quite sophisticated. The base of the device houses three charging stations for three interchangeable tips, and there is an additional USB charging port located on the side of the device.
You can use the IDAPT i4 to charge most modern day smartphones, the iPhone, the PSP, Nintendo DS, a BlackBerry, and many more devices. In the package, you get a generous total of 6 tips, which includes two micro-USB and a single iPhone / iPod tip. These interchangeable tips easily snap into the base of the IDAPT i4, and are easily switched out.
Speaking of the base, the base is made of an anti-scratching surface that is also glossy and quite spiffy looking. A convenient red / green light in front of the three charging stations, is used to indicate when a device is plugged on to a tip and charging. This is a function that the PowerSlice lacks.
Off on the right side of the base is a USB port which you can use to plug in an additional device. This port is powerful enough to charge the iPad. However, we would have preferred it if you could charge the iPad on the base of the IDAPT i4 as well, unfortunately the included iPod / iPhone tip is not strong enough to hold the iPad up.
Another gripe we have with the IDAPT i4 Universal Charger is that it doesn’t seem to charge up devices as quickly as they charge when they are plugged into a dedicated charger in an AC outlet. With that said, the IDAPT i4 Charging Station is still a solid, well thought-out and well-priced product. It’s also the kind of product that is becoming more and more necessary in today’s homes and offices, where having 3 to 4 mobile devices is hardly uncommon. After all, no one likes a desk full of messy tangled cables, and the i4 cleans up that mess. We also like the device’s design, its affordable tips which cost $9.99 on average, and most of all – the convenience and tidiness that it offers for mobile users. Pricing for the Universal Charger IDAPT i4 retails for $59.99, and it is available with a USA, UK, Europe, or Australia plug.
The Good: Reasonably priced, charge up-to 4 devices at once, sophisticated and tidy design, support for over 4500 devices, with special tip – it even charges AA or AAA rechargeable batteries
The Bad: Would love to see better iPad support and more charging points on the base, devices tend to charge a bit on the slow side
