The LG Viper LS840 is a pretty monumental device for Sprint. For starters, it’s their first smartphone to come with support of their upcoming 4G LTE network. It also packs in an amazing 4″ 700 NIT display, which happens to be the brightest display on any smartphone on the market right now. But not only is this phone future-proof, it’s also green. For starters, the Viper’s packaging is 100% recyclable. Furthermore, the device casing is made of 50% recycled plastic and is RoHS compliant. It also comes bundled with an energy efficient charger with a 0.03 no-load power rating.
But don’t let its intimidating name fool you, LG is actually targeting this phone towards moms and families. They are positioning it as an affordable phone that doesn’t make any compromises. And this proves to be true since not only is it future-proof with LTE support, but it also packs in NFC with Google Wallet support, a powerful 1.2 GHz Dual-Core Processor, and a 5 megapixel rear-facing Autofocus camera with 1080p video recording. LG is even bundling the device with a year’s worth of 50GB of Cloud Storage from Box.com, which is in itself a $250 value. This cloud storage can be used to upload and share family photos and videos.
LG also has had a special app developed for the Viper which is designed with parents and kids in mind. The Life’s Good Fairytale app takes interactive storybooks to the next level by getting children and parents actively involved in story time together. We’ll have a full video review of the app up soon.
Apps aside, in particular, we’re really blown away by the Viper’s display which sports a 480×800 resolution and 16.7 million colors. This display is not only super bright, but sharp, with vibrant colors. It also holds up a lot better in direct sunlight than most other smartphones. The display is also extra tough, as it’s made of Corning Gorilla Glass. Plus, in terms of form-factor, the LS840 hits the sweet-spot with a generous, but not gigantic display, and a 5 ounce body weight.
The LG Viper goes on sale this sunday – just in time for Earth Day, for $99.99 with a 2 year contract, after a $50 mail-in rebate.
