If you’re wondering what’s going on with the Google Doodle today, and are thinking that Google forgot that Halloween is already over or something, don’t fret. It’s not a belated Halloween wish, but it is a celebration of a man who left an indelible mark on Halloween traditions.
Today is Bram Stoker’s 165th birthday, which isn’t to say he’s still alive, but who knows, maybe he’s just resting in his coffin somewhere until nightfall. It would be all too appropriate for the man behind Dracula, a horror novel classic, if not the horror novel. Count Dracula proved to be a powerful undead lord indeed – 115 years have passed since the novel was completed, and the ageless vampire is still haunting just about any medium of entertainment he can sweep into.
Stoker’s idea of the vampire has set the tone for the popular conception of vampires ever since – well, until Twilight, that is, but I’m not so sure I would put Twilight on the level of Dracula. Something tells me that really would get Stoker to rise from that coffin.
Plus, without Dracula, there is noCastlevania. That alone should get you to take a second to pay your respects to a horror legend today.
