‘Tis the season for the Oprah Effect to get unleashed. Oprah Winfrey may have retired from television, but she certainly hasn’t retired from the public eye. Her annual “Oprah’s Favorite Things” show took a break last year, but returned this year as a two-hour special that aired on Sunday on OWN, Oprah’s own network. Tears, screaming, and jubilation over holiday goodies made a triumphant return to television, as Winfrey gave her favorite things to military spouses.
The nation’s premiere tastemaker plugged more than a few gadgets this year, all of which will no doubt benefit from the bump in sales courtesy of Oprah. That includes the Microsoft Surface, which needs all the help it can get, after sales of the Windows 8 flagship device have thus far been self-described by Microsoft executives as “modest.” Oprah says it “feels like a Mercedes-Benz,” though, for what that’s worth.
Oprah also likes the Bose VideoWave II, showing that she’s not just into the mainstream. The somewhat unheralded television packs a television, surround sound system, and music player into one device. The convenience and lack of a need for extra audio equipment got a nod from Oprah. The Nespresso Lattissima gets credit for its stylish red color and for whipping up your morning coffee, espresso, latte, or cappuccino.
Oprah also featured a set of particularly expensive greeting cards, reserved for only the most committed pet lovers. Pet owners can send in pictures of their pets to Wagging Tail Custom Portrait Cards, which will create a stylized digital illustration of your pet to put on the cover of a set of 50 greeting cards, though the $200 asking price for that set is a little daunting. Oprah must really love her dogs.
Of course, when you’re Oprah, you can usually get things your way. That includes Beats By Dre Powerbeats, earbuds that have been done up in Oprah’s favorite, apple green, and are being offered as a special for readers of O magazine. Oprah gives the Powerbeats a couple thumbs up for being ideal workout earbuds.
If you want to get your hands on Oprah’s favorite things the easy way, you can enter The 12-Day Holiday Give-O-Way once a day on Oprah’s website starting on November 26 and running until December 7. A code for each day can be found in the December issue of O magazine, which must be entered on the website. One person will win the whole grab bag of goodies each day, totalling about $28,000 in value. Actually, the goodies only total about $21,000, but Oprah, in her wisdom, thought of everything – the extra $7,000 in cash is for offsetting the tax bill that will come with winning those prizes.
Everyone knows about the Oprah Effect when it comes to her book club, which makes for guaranteed best-sellers without fail, but getting on “Oprah’s Favorite Things” is no less of a boon. Really, we don’t have to be specific. Everything Oprah touches turns to gold, unless it’s beef and we’re in the mid ’90s.
