The ultra-tiny speaker system attaches to the back of a 2nd or 3rd generation iPad, and has a 10-hour battery life. The bass-heavy speakers are great for movies, and the cover included with the Thunderstorm can double as a stand for easy movie watching. That said, Belkin is saying the Thunderstorm was designed with mobile gaming in mind, hence the handheld part of the name. You’ll be able to comfortably hold your iPad and play games, even with the Thunderstorm attached. Integrated air channels and an Audify sound processor combine to provide high-fidelity sound and booming bass that Belkin says you’ll be able to feel while you’re in the middle of your gaming sessions. A free companion app looks to be ready in time for shipment, and will allow you to tweak the settings on that Audify processor to your preferences.
As you might have expected, the Thunderstorm attaches to the iPad using a 30-pin connector dock, which is why this will only work with 2nd and 3rd generation iPads. From the looks of the sleek, form-fitting design, that bulky 30-pin-to-Lightning adapter won’t work too well with this one. The Belkin Thunderstorm Handheld Home Theater can be pre-ordered now on Belkin’s online store for $200. Nothing specific in the way of a shipping date has been given by Belkin yet.
