Honeywell’s 5-in-1 UV Allergen Remover Air Purifier Tower Review

True story: I live on top of a club that, unfortunately, makes my apartment smell like smoke. It stinks! Reviewing Honeywell’s 5-in-1 True HEPA Tower UV Allergen Remover Air Purifier has been a lifesaver. Not only does my room no longer smell like cigarettes, but it’s reduced the number of allergens and has allowed me to breath and sleep better.

What is it?

Honeywell’s 5-in-1 Allergen Remover is a glorified Air Purifier tower that stands 2.5 feet tall. It (1) fights germs, (2) captures large airborne particles, lint, dust, hair, and pollen (3) captures microscopic allergens, (4) reduces odors, and (5) reduces certain VOCs and gasses. Basically, it rids the air of just about everything you don’t want to breathe. It captures 99.97% of any airborne particles helping reduce germs like mold, bacteria, and fungi. The UV Germicidal lamps help eliminate germs like e-coli.

The 5-in-1 uses HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters, which means the filters have to comply with a set of specifications set by the US Department of Energy. If you’re allergy prone, odor sensitive, or are conscious about indoor air quality, this product could be your best friend. It removes household odors and captures harmful gases and chemical fumes like ammonia or benzene. Harmful odors from paint, cleaning products, and mildew are removed just like the smell from pets, tobacco, or kitchen odors.

Where do you use it?

You can basically use it in any room that’s not too large. For instance, any bedroom should be okay, whereas a big open basement might be too big for best results. You’re not supposed to use it in damp areas or areas prone to moisture like the bathroom.

The Setup

There’s not much to the setup, you unwrap the filters, pop them in, and plug the tower into the wall. There’s three filters, the two HEPA filters, which need to be replaced once per year, and then there’s a front pre-filter. The unit comes with a carbon pre-filter, which is odor reducing, but needs to be replaced every three months. It also comes with a re-usable washable pre-filter that can be used instead of the carbon odor reducing version. The dual UV lamps need to be replaced after 9 months of continuous use (they have a seperate on/off control).

Features

Aside from the 5-in-1 air cleaning, the tower has a few neat features. It has 12 different power levels, which you can adjust based on cleaning level and volume. There’s an auto-off timer from 1 to 18 hours so you can keep the heavy cleaning for when you’re out and about. The tower oscillates to disperse fresher air throughout the room. It can circulate the room air 5 times in an hour. Best of all, there’s a display that tells you how clean or dirty the filters are and also when to change the UV bulb. This will give you plenty of time to buy more for exactly when they need to be replaced. It’s also Energy Star rated, which means it’s not a power hog.

Performance

When the 5-in-1 is running, my room undoubtedly feels fresher, which is a result of its multiple features (air circulation, carbon pre-filter, allergen removing and air purification). Best of all, my room and apartment smell amazing. This is a very refreshing difference from the usual smokey stale smell seeping from the downstairs neighbors. It only takes a few minutes to really notice a difference, especially if you crank up the intensity. I leave the 5-in-1 in my room while I sleep. As an allergy-prone individual, I have to admit it helps. I still have allergies, but I’ve been sleeping better. The fan and air circulation has been a real treat this winter when the apartment gets stuffy from the heater. Again, it makes a big difference while I sleep. The noise may bother some, but at a low intensity it’s just a gentile hum. At a higher intensity it can sound like a loud fan. In New York City it helps drown out the outside noise. The oscillation feature barely adds any volume.

Conclusion

Live healthier, live happier. Not only does Honeywell’s 5-in-1 True HEPA Tower UV Allergen Remover Air Purifier give you the peace of mind that your indoor air is being improved and rid of anything harmful or toxic, but it can make a noticeable difference if you have allergies, asthma, pets, or just want to sleep better….Or in my case, if you don’t want it to smell like you live on top of a club. It retails for $249.99 but can be purchased for $215.99 from Target.com. Considering this product can make a vast improvement on your indoor quality of life, it can easily pay itself off.

The Good: Works well, Great for air circulation, Rooms feel and smell fresher, Oscillates, Filter replacement meter, Built-in Timer, Different intensities
The Bad: Have to replace filters and UV bulb at least once per year, High intensity can be loud
