You know LEGO has arrived in a big way when LEGO products start getting the launch party treatment, complete with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.
That’s what is going down tonight in Los Angeles, as Belkin and LEGO celebrate the launch of the first official LEGO smartphone case. This one is made for the iPhone 5 and the iPod Touch, and is – what else? – a certified LEGO baseplate. You can dig out your old LEGO bricks (or use the ones that may or may not be strewn across your floor already), and get to building your own iPhone case in a way that puts other custom cases to shame. Clearly, this should be used with LEGO Mindstorms robotics sets, because why not have a little LEGO car that you can have drive your phone to you when you get a text?
Otherwise, these cases are slightly raised above the display to protect the touchscreen from damage, and protect the buttons on the side. Both the iPhone and iPod Touch case will be available in a variety of colors, too. The iPhone 5 LEGO case is available now from Belkin for $40. The iPod Touch case will be good for the fifth generation only, and will arrive in the fall for $30. Lego pieces and minifigs not included.
