Speck CandyShell + Faceplate for iPhone 5S Review

Speck’s iconic CandyShell case has been the subject of many imitation iPhone cases lately, but it’s hard to top Speck’s style and freshness. Their latest to the scene is the CandyShell + Faceplate for iPhone 5/5S, which makes your phone look more delicious than ever. Speck now offers iPhone 360 degree protection in the same CandyShell form factor.

The high gloss, ultra-bright, CandyShell now covers your entire iPhone. The product is two pieces, the case and the faceplate, though when applied the pieces appear to melt into each other for a seamless design. The CandyShell case is exactly the same as the stand-alone case, it just comes with the faceplate that perfectly meshes with the form and color scheme.

CandyShell is appropriately named for it’s hard tasty-looking exterior and it’s soft and protective interior. With the faceplate, supreme protection is achieved. The faceplate is not flat, it has a 3D candied appearance. It falls flush with the shell’s raised border around iPhone’s face.

The faceplate uses a reusable adhesive to stick to iPhone’s face. It has a built-in screen protector that you can reapply as many times as you want until you hit perfection. Don’t settle for air bubbles. Since the faceplate isn’t flat, it leaves a raised circle around the home button. At first this was a bit strange to dig for the home button, but it actually turned out to make the fingerprint Touch ID scan easier. It perfectly frames your finger for scanning. Unfortunately, the raised faceplate makes swiping up for your iOS7 Control Center much more difficult–this takes some extra practice.

Like all other CandyShells, Speck incorporates large rubbery button overlays for easy access to the power and volume buttons. You have to dig a bit for the vibrate toggle but it’s not hard. The bottom of the case has cutouts for the lightning and headphone ports. They’re nice sized cutouts, but docking your iPhone is probably out of the question.

For such a seemingly simple addition to the CandyShell case, the CandyShell + Faceplate seems like an entirely new beast. It’s sleek for a case that provides all-around protection, and it morphs your iPhone into a new device. There’s six fun color-schemes to choose from, the brightest is this Pomodoro flavor. Pricing out at $44.95, it’s more expensive than average. Once it hits Amazon it should come down a bit in price. The Speck CandyShell + Faceplate for iPhone 5/5S is currently available from SpeckProducts.com. Unfortunately, the Faceplate is not for sale as a standalone product.
