The skies are going to be a little friendlier once late 2015 rolls around. That’s when AT&T is planning on completing its rollout of their new 4G LTE network – at 35,000 feet.
Flights will soon be so much more device friendly. The new LTE service will provide Wi-Fi connectivity in-flight, and there’s some suggestion that in-flight entertainment will soon be something that you can access on your very own device. Of course, you’ll have access to the Internet, too, which I’m pretty sure can’t be beat when it comes to in-flight entertainment.
Basically, AT&T has come to the conclusion that it has the cash and the spectrum floating around to make 4G LTE a reality in the air. For anyone who’s ever been bored to tears on a flight, that’s good news – let’s just hope they don’t charge too much. It seems possible that you could access in-flight entertainment for free using the LTE service, while paying for access to the rest of the Internet, but that’s all speculation for now.
