Despite the large stable of mascots McDonald’s has out back, they’ve seen fit to add another one. Fair enough – the Hamburglar probably isn’t the greatest role model, Mayor McCheese doesn’t exactly promote healthy eating, and I still don’t know what’s going on with Grimace. A new, positive McDonald’s mascot is needed for a new generation. A sidekick for Ronald that can take us into the future.
That mascot has arrived, and he is Happy. That’s his name. He is an anthropomorphic Happy Meal box, so I’m not sure I’m willing to hand out an A for effort here. Be that as it may, Happy comes bearing a new message for a new century – eat healthy, but still eat at McDonald’s, OK? Happy will be encouraging kids to eat fewer hamburgers, and more fruits and vegetables; less Coke, more juice and water. Also, kids should try Yoplait’s low-fat strawberry Go-Gurt, which will now be a side for Happy Meals and Mighty Kids Meals.
Expect commercials soon. Odds that those commercials will feature Pharrell’s Happy? Oh, I’d say they would put California Chrome’s Belmont odds to shame.
