As for the logo, Foursquare ‘designed it to be a mix of map pin and superhero emblem,’ but I think it looks like, uh, a butt, but sideways, and there’s something coming out of the hip, or—you know what, I’m not very good at this. You guys take a crack at it.
The important part is the new app. Check-ins, the very foundations of Foursquare’s popularity, have now completely moved over to Swarm, an app Foursquare made just for check-ins. I’m still not clear on why they did that, but there you go. You can still check-in using the Foursquare app, to add to the confusion. If you have Swarm installed, you’ll have the option of checking-in within Foursquare, but it’ll be using the Swarm API. If you don’t have Swarm installed, no checking in is happening for you.
Foursquare itself will just handle local search. They’ve been a little vague on how exactly they’re improving local search, but apparently with the new update, results should be more personalized, based on preferences you set, people you follow, and your habits. Their blog post states that ‘no two people will have the same experience with the app,’ which are some pretty lofty words. We’ll find out soon enough if they can back them up—there’s no set date for the release of the update, but Foursquare’s announcement suggests that it’s imminent.
