Now that we’re past the halfway mark of 2014, we’re getting the State of YouTube address straight from the horse’s mouth. Turns out, when talking about the 10 most watched YouTube videos of 2014, that horse is a dark one.
Katy Perry’s Dark Horse is the most-watched video on YouTube so far this year, with just shy of 500 million views. It probably won’t surprise you to learn that the entire top 10 is populated by music videos, so we’re well past the days when the zany and unexpected dominated. That said, there’s still room for some surprises—#SELFIE took the sixth spot, a strange parody that keeps the spirit of Ye Olde YouTube alive.
Everything else is a little more mainstream. A pair of World Cup anthems took the third and fourth spots, with Shakira’s La La La beating out We Are One, the official World Cup song. Shakira actually took two of the top three spots, with her collaboration with Rihanna, Can’t Remember to Forget You, taking second. Enrique Iglesias also had two entries in the top 10, taking fifth and tenth with Bailando (Espanol) and El Perdedor (Pop), respectively.
To no one’s surprise, karaoke anthem Let It Go from Frozen made the list at number eight. Rounding out the top ten was Iggy Azalea’s Fancy at number seven and Jason Derulo’s Wiggle at number nine. Of course, this is just the halfway mark, so by the end of the year, you can expect some as yet unforeseen pop anthems to climb up onto this pop culture Olympus.
