As was foretold by prophecy back in June, the Samsung Nook tablet is arriving this month. The collaboration between Samsung and the recently spun-off Nook Media has resulted in a 7″ tablet going by the name Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook. You’ll be able to find the new tablet in Barnes & Noble stores and online as of today, but should you?
It’s the lightest Nook ever, so there’s that. It’s 9.74 oz, which still lags behind the 7.8 oz of the Kindle Paperwhite. Depending on what position you contort yourself into when you get to reading, that difference might matter to you. Of course, if you want more from your eReader, the HD screen on the Tab 4 Nook is looking pretty solid, and in this case, it wins the weight wars with the Kindle Fire, which comes in at 14.6 oz. One big addition for Nook fans will be cameras—a 3 MP rear camera and a 1.3 MP front camera, which means you can finally use a Nook tablet as a VoIP phone, because I know you’ve always wanted to.
Samsung and Nook Media are trying to lure you over with the enormous Nook store. To get you started on seeing what the store has to offer, they’re giving away $200 worth of free content with each Tab 4 Nook. That includes Freakonomics, The Wanderer, and I am Number Four, plus a free episode each of Veep, Hannibal, and one of our favorites, Orphan Black. You can also get 14-day free trial subscriptions to a dozen different magazines.
The Galaxy Tab 4 Nook is available now in an ad-free, 8 GB model that comes in white or black. It’s selling for $200, which gets knocked down to $180 after an instant rebate.
