When LEGO announced LEGO Dimensions, their answer to the figurine-video game genre pioneered by Skylanders and Disney Infinity, they already had characters from DC Comics, The Lord of the Rings, The LEGO Movie, The Wizard of Oz, LEGO Ninjago and Back to the Future ready to mix it up in the LEGO mega-universe. Those characters are getting a lot of new friends today, while we’re getting a little more info about the digital and physical gameplay we can expect this fall.
In addition to the previously announced characters, LEGO Dimensions will feature characters and sets from The Simpsons, Doctor Who, Ghostbusters, Portal, Jurassic World, Midway Arcade, LEGO Chima and Scooby-Doo!. Nothing too surprising there except for Portal — we hadn’t heard much about other video games showing up in Dimensions, but it looks like LEGO is working on making it happen. Who knows, maybe we can get Master Chief and Mario in there too, usher in the fan fiction singularity.
But, as awesome as the extensive fan service will be, the game needs to be fun, too. Today, we found out about how LEGO will keep things fresh in the real world. In LEGO Dimensions, you’ll be able to scan physical Dimensions sets that you build into the game, which will include weapons and vehicles. You won’t just be building those sets and letting them sit around, though — once you scan a finished set into the game, you’ll get instructions on how to tear it down and build something new with the same pieces. Each set will have a total of three things you can build and scan into the game, which should give builders more bang for their buck.
LEGO also released a new trailer for the game today, which comes out on September 27. As always, Batman figures prominently.
