The last trailer before Star Wars: The Force Awakens finally hits theaters on December 18 dropped last night during halftime the Eagles-Giants Monday Night Football game. I watched both the trailer and the game last night, and the trailer was by far the most exciting part of that telecast. But enough about the game, let’s talk about that trailer!
While previous trailers have focused more on nostalgia or the First Order, last night’s trailers showed a little more of Finn and Rey, the two new heroes played by John Boyega and Daisy Ridley. It sets up about what you’d expect and hope for from the beginning of a new space epic — a couple of young, directionless people looking for a purpose and ready to go on the hero’s journey. From the rest of the trailer, it looks like it won’t take either of them long to find that purpose.
The second half of the trailer is heavy on classic Star Wars, with TIE Fighters, X-Wings, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Leia, R2-D2, and probably Luke (for one frame) all showing up to connect the dots between the original trilogy and this one. It seems that in the decades since the end of the original trilogy, a lot about the Jedi and the Sith have been forgotten, meaning that a history lesson is in order. It’s a cool approach — the movie is no doubt trying to appeal to a younger audience that has certainly heard of but may not have watched the original trilogy, drawing a neat parallel between the new audience and the new heroes on screen.
The movie looks great, and if nothing else, it’s thrilling to hear that soaring John Williams score again. Tickets for the movie are available now at theaters nationwide, and I understand they’ve been selling at ridiculous rates. Good luck getting into a theater on opening night!
