Blizzard has long been known, among other things, for its hype-generating trailers. Today’s trailer marks new territory for the developer — it’s the first one for a live-action feature film based on one of their franchises. And, while it might not have the ‘Hell, it’s about time’ punch of the Starcraft 2 teaser back in 2007, today’s trailer for Warcraft looks pretty promising all the same.
Like anything that’s going to involve orcs, trolls, the undead, upright-walking bull-looking dudes (Tauren), and all other manner of mythical creatures, the new movie is going to be pretty CGI heavy, something the trailer doesn’t bother to hide. While the trailer shows a lot (a lot!) of classic Warcraft characters and locations, the bulk of it concentrates on the humans and the orcs, who are fleeing the crumbling world of Draenor for the greener pastures the humans inhabit.
The movie is serving as a prequel not just to the seemingly indestructible World of Warcraft (11 years as of this month!), but to the entire Warcraft series, fleshing out the orcs’ arrival on Azeroth and the early plots of Gul’dan and the Shadow Council. The casting list throws out a few more familiar names like Anduin Lothar, Medivh, Varian Wrynn, Durotan, Orgrim Doomhammer, Grommash Hellscream, and Khadgar, who I’m pretty sure had an herb in World of Warcraft named after him. I don’t know, I’ve been clean for a while. I can’t remember.
Warcraft is scheduled to hit theaters on June 16 of next year. It’s being co-written by the writer of K-PAX (Chris Metzen) and one of the writers of Moon (Duncan Jones, who will also direct), and will star Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Daniel Wu, Robert Kazinsky, and Toby Kebbell.
