Wii U owners have been hard up for good gaming news, and while getting Minecraft was nice, it’s hard to get to excited knowing you can play that game on any other platform (including smartphones). Exclusive content is always a nice consolation prize, though — on May 17, Minecraft on the Wii U is getting a Mario-themed content pack, and it’ll be available for free.
Despite being the ultimate build-whatever-you-want game, Minecraft content packs have always been big hits, and we’ve seen tons of marquee names over the years like The Simpsons. The Mario pack will include textures, music and sound effects from the series and a premade Mario-style world. Character skins will include Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Bowser, and Wario. Meanwhile, out go the Creepers and in comes Dry Bones and the Hammer Bros, the latter of which seem particularly well-suited for wrecking everything you’ve built. According to Nintendo, they’re pulling inspiration specifically from Super Mario World (SNES), Super Mario 64 (N64), and Super Mario Sunshine (GC).
So, will this be an even better way to make your own Mario worlds than Mario Maker? Eh, I don’t think we’re going to go that far. But, it’s a pretty sweet bonus for Minecraft fans who have decided to check out the Wii U version of the game — not a bad idea, since the Wii U gamepad makes keeping track of your inventory a lot easier.
