The ultimate BFF cafe is on its way to New York. Come this September, Rue La Rue Cafe will open at 4396 Broadway in Washington Heights in honor of the late Rue McClanahan. But, this memorial is going to have a lot more than just her name on it.
A real life BFF of McClanahan’s, Michael J. LaRue, inherited her memorabilia after she passed away in 2010, and it’s much from that collection that will decorate the new cafe. It sounds like those goodies will be complemented, in true theme-restaurant fashion, with food and drink selections with the main characters’ names worked in somehow. As long as they’re more creative than something like “the Blanche Burger,” I think we’ll be OK.
One piece of memorabilia in particular will stick out — McClanahan’s piano. It’ll be used for live performances, which should make for a nice, quiet, relaxing atmosphere where everyone can talk about their sex lives as freely as the Golden Girls would have wanted us to.
Oh, and expect new merch, too. LaRue managed to get Disney to play ball. The mega-corporation is allowing him to use the Golden Girls name to create merchandise specifically to sell at the cafe. Sure sounds like a worthwhile trip over to upper Manhattan to us.
